Mission
Fork Union Military Academy's Mission is to educate, develop, and inspire young men in a college preparatory, Christian, military structured environment. Cadets build character and learn leadership, independence, responsibility and discipline in a setting that encourages mental, physical, and spiritual growth. In this mission, our School Counselor is at the heart of our Leadership program and fosters personal development with daily interaction and the ability to teach, advise and coach our Cadets.
Description
The School Counselor is responsible for assisting FUMA cadets with all aspects of mental health, counseling, and wellbeing while on campus. Futher the School Counselor will be working in conjunction with coaches, TAC Instructors, Academics, and other faculty to best support our cadets. The School Counselor will contribute knowledge and skills within their scope of training, and instilling an environment of inclusion and safety for the cadets on campus and shall be further willing to adhere to, enforce, encourage, and instruct per the Academy's mission and core values to all Cadets.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Interact daily with cadets
Work with the Crisis Team
Counsel cadets, staff, and families related to adjustment issues
Work in conjunction with the Infirmary Staff regarding student mental health and wellness
Consult with the Academic team to help with identifying potential learning differences, mentoring strategies, and best practices related to mental health and well ness
Recommend resources to staff, faculty, and families related to mental health and wellness
Work in conjunction to the risk management team regarding best practices
Guide cadets in the development of skills and strategies to identify and deal with their potential problems
Review admissions files with Admissions team as needed
Be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite
Strong organizational skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Detail oriented
Problem solving abilities
Ability to plan, organize, implement, and manage multiple priorities and projects
Ability to adapt to real time situations, and honor chain of command in real time
Ability to be on call for mental health situations or emergent crisis while cadets are on campus
Either hold currently, or be able to obtain, certification in Youth Mental Health First Aid.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Must have a working knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders
Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions and for career or educational counseling and guidance
Knowledge of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and influences, human migrations, ethnicity and cultures and their history and origins
Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services
Knowledge of child and adolescent behavior, development and social influences
Ability to follow confidentiality policy, procedure, and laws
Strong interpersonal skills
Education and Experience:
Must have a Master's Degree in psychology, counseling, or a related field Current Virginia state credentials or licensing is required.
Virginia State Licensure to practice is required.
Previous experience working with youth is preferred - behavioral background preferred
