School Nurse (RN) for Special Ed School – Full-Time or Part-Time
Our nursing team works with special needs students with medical requirements when they're at school or in the community. The Gillen Brewer School is a private, 12-month special education school on the Upper East Side dedicated to the education of children with challenging, and often multiple disabilities, including language-based and nonverbal learning disabilities. Hours: Monday - Friday; 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.*
Calendar to Follow: 12-month Academic
FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary
The School Nurse (RN) is a critical part of the health and safety of the Gillen Brewer Community. The School Nurse reports to the Supervising School Nurse who reports to the Assistant Head of School. The School Nurse helps to ensure the optimum health and safety of students by monitoring health and illness in the community, performing nursing assessment and care, and performing health education for the school community. Gillen Brewer expects School Nurses to conduct themselves in a professional manner with regard to attire, attitude, participation, communication, and interactions with staff, children, and parents. School Nurses are expected to understand the school’s policies, procedures, and guidelines as set in the staff handbook, located on the school’s shared Google Drive. As part of the school community, School Nurses are encouraged to participate in school community events, join committees, and create a positive working environment for children, families, and colleagues. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in the implementation of medical care plans, including COVID-19 preparedness plans, ParentLocker app administration, and ensure compliance with plans across all school settings
- Review and closely examine medical documentation collection practices of student and staff data to ensure compliance
- Monitor health and well-being for staff and students
- Promote a healthy school environment by ensuring appropriate exclusion for infectious illnesses and informing community members when applicable
- Ensure the school follows all federal, state, and local mandates/laws, which include but are not limited to: public health, communicable diseases, immunizations
- Provide both acute and non-acute nursing assessment and corresponding care for students and staff members
- Responsible for both emergency and daily medications for students
- Maintain legal written records of nursing assessments and medication administration
- Maintain accurate, confidential student health records, and monitor any chronic or acute illnesses
- Maintain accurate, confidential staff health records
- Health education and training for staff members
- Act as an advocate for health-related issues, consulting with outside practitioners as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Professional Requirements
- Registered Professional Nurse licensed in the State of New York (required)
- Bachelor of Science degree with two years of relevant professional experience (required)
- CPR/AED certification (required)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills (required)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with pediatric special needs populations
- Proficient research skills and ability to keep up with current best practices
- Understanding of childhood growth and developmental stages
- Experience as a school, pediatric and/or public health nurse
Physical Requirements
Employees must have the physical capacity to navigate the classroom and school environments in order to effectively meet the needs of our students. Such physical requirements include but are not limited to: walking, standing, sitting, climbing up and down stairs, kneeling, stooping, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting. Employees must be able to sit at a desk and work on a computer for long periods of time to complete necessary paperwork. Vision, with or without lenses, must be sufficient to read in both paper and digital formats. Employees must have the ability to hear, read, write, and speak in English.
Professional Development
The school is a community of learners. In addition to staff development and training at Gillen Brewer, employees are encouraged to pursue educational goals through conferences, college courses, and various workshops. Staff is required to attend all staff development workshops, staff, team, and supervision meetings. Staff is also encouraged to attend all school functions listed on the school calendar.
Supervision & Support
The Supervising School Nurse will oversee and assess the School Nurse through daily observation, ensuring that there is an appropriate level of education and understanding of all relevant medical knowledge. The Assistant Head of School will oversee and analyze the nursing department through observation cycles, team meetings, and conversations with staff. Staff development and support through modeling and coaching will be provided; this will include in-house and outside professional opportunities. Frequency of observations and feedback sessions will be determined by the Supervising School Nurse, Assistant Head of School, and Head of School. Evidence of effectiveness will be collected through observations, discussions, and products.
Other Requirements
You must be authorized to work in the United States and be willing to undergo a number of clearances, including NYC DOE fingerprinting, a medical health form, and other background checks.
