Since 1888, Saltus Grammar School has been shaping the future of education in Bermuda. Teacher of Physical and Health Education
The successful candidate will teach Physical and Health Education at the Middle and Senior School levels, using competency-based curriculum frameworks, including the British Columbia Curriculum, to design lessons and assessments. The role also includes active involvement in Saltus’ strong extracurricular sports program, including coaching and training school teams, with commitments that may include after-school, evening, and some weekend activities.
Responsibilities
Teach Physical and Health Education across Middle and Senior School levels, aligned with competency-based curriculum frameworks, including the BC Curriculum
Design engaging learning experiences that support students’ physical literacy, health education, and overall wellbeing
Support students in understanding how healthy choices influence their physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing
Enable students to develop and apply strategies to pursue personal healthy-living goals, including fitness, nutritional awareness, and coping with social and emotional change
Guide students in analysing health-related information and practising safety, respect, and healthy relationship skills in their daily lives
Use a range of teaching approaches, including inquiry-based, skill based, and direct instruction
Employ a variety of assessment and evaluation approaches, including student-led conferences and online reporting systems, aligned with competency-based learning
Create a differentiated, inclusive, and highly motivating learning environment in which all learners can thrive
Integrate Social Emotional Learning and wellbeing-focused practices into lesson design and instruction
Contribute to the planning, delivery, and supervision of the School’s extracurricular sports program, including coaching responsibilities
Willingness to participate fully in extracurricular activities and the broader life of the School
Willingness to provide cover for absences and/or advisory responsibilities as required
Minimum Qualifications, Experience & Skills
A recognised graduate qualification at the university level, with appropriate academic credentials demonstrating expertise in Physical and Health Education
A minimum of three years’ teaching experience
Licensure with, or eligibility for licensure by, the Bermuda Educators Council
A reflective, lifelong learner committed to professional growth and staying current with subject knowledge, pedagogy, and resources
A responsive practitioner able to adapt teaching strategies and learning experiences to meet student needs
Highly professional collaboration skills and the ability to contribute positively to a collegial school culture
Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced, evolving school environment
Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, the Mission, Vision, Core Values, and Strategic Priorities of Saltus
Ability to handle confidential information with discretion, diplomacy, and tact
Commitment to student safeguarding, wellbeing, and child protection best practices
Relevant student safety certifications (e.g., SCARS, First Aid/CPR/ AED) are preferred or must be obtained
A clean criminal record
