The Storm King School is an 8th-12th grade, co-educational, college preparatory boarding/day school of 170 students. Our students come from throughout the US and 25 countries. We are located in the spectacular Hudson Highlands, overlooking the Hudson River and surrounded by 6,000 acres of green space made up of Black Rock Forest and Storm King State Park.
We are seeking a compassionate, dynamic, and experienced School Counselor to join our team. The successful candidate will work closely with students, faculty, parents, and administration to provide a comprehensive counseling program that focuses primarily on the social-emotional welfare of our students. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work with a diverse group of young people in a vibrant boarding/day school environment, where the counselor plays a key role in fostering our nurturing and productive school culture.
Key Responsibilities:
Promote mental health awareness and wellness throughout the school community, supporting an inclusive and open environment for discussing mental health
Develop and implement creative, effective ways to assist students in developing coping strategies and resilience in handling academic pressures, personal challenges, family concerns, peer relationships, and more
Provide individual short-term counseling, small group sessions/workshops, and crisis interventions for students struggling with personal, emotional, social, and behavioral issues
Maintain appropriate records of counseling sessions and ensure compliance with relevant privacy and ethical guidelines
Serve as a liaison between the school, parents, and community mental health professionals when additional support or referral services are necessary
Stay current on legal, ethical, and professional standards for counseling in educational settings
Cheerful engagement and visibility in broader areas of the school as appropriate
Primary Qualifications:
Master’s degree in School Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
Current state or national licensure as a school counselor, licensed professional counselor (LPC), or licensed clinical social worker (LCSW)
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience working in a school environment, preferably in an independent/private, boarding, or high school setting
Significant and demonstrated knowledge of adolescent development, mental health, crisis intervention, counseling strategies, and school appropriate interventions
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, parents, and external professionals
Discretion and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality
Knowledgeable about legal considerations in school counseling programs
Collaborates with flexibility, optimism, energy and a sense of humor
Salary and Benefits: The salary range for a full-time position is between $70,000 and $90,000 depending on experience. A full range of benefits are included. Based on the wishes of the ideal candidate combined with the needs of the school, we would also consider a part-time role with mutual agreement.
