The Lovett School Culture and Community

Reports to: Middle School Division Head and Director of K - 12 School Counseling

Primary Responsibilities:

Implement the Middle School Guidance and Counseling Program.

• Teach guidance classes in grades 6-8
• Lead guidance curriculum development
• Serve as a member of the grade level team in grades 6-8
• Assist with the transition of new students to The Lovett School
• Assist with orientation activities for 6th-grade students
• Implement character education programs and activities 
• Serve as a member of the Middle School Culture and Community Team

Counsel with students regarding personal, social, and emotional needs

• Counsel students in response to the identified needs of individuals and groups of students
• Assess the needs of referred students and make appropriate referrals to community professionals when needed
• Respond to crises in tandem with other school personnel

Implement and Support the Advisory Program

• Assist with developing Advisory activities related to character-building
• Serve as a resource and support to advisors and their advisees
• Provide training and oversight to new faculty advisors
• Serve as an advisor when needed

Consult with and serve as a resource for teachers, faculty, and parents regarding the social, emotional, and academic needs of students

• Conduct and facilitate conferences with faculty, students, and parents
• Consult with parent support groups, help educate and build skills with parents around topics pertinent to adolescence
• Maintain records to document interactions, interventions, and decisions
• Maintain and respect the confidentiality of student and school personnel, while maintaining the safety and welfare of all students and faculty
• Perform responsibilities in an organized, accurate, timely, and dependable manner
• Keep informed of current professional trends and pursue professional growth

Administrator 

• Serve as a member of the Middle School Administrative Team and assist with administrative duties

Position Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will have a Master's degree in counseling, significant experience in school counseling at the middle school level, a thorough knowledge of developments in the field, an enjoyment of young people, good interpersonal skills, and effectiveness in writing and speaking.  This person is a model of healthy behaviors for colleagues, will work in partnership with several departments in the middle school and across campus, will seek out opportunities to align the program with the other division's counseling departments, and will utilize internal data and national trends to inform programming decisions and other student support activities.
