The Registered Nurse provides nursing and educational services to advance the well-being, academic success, and health of students. This position is currently a full-time year-round position working four days a week.
The Kinkaid School is a co-educational, nonsectarian day school enrolling over 1,400 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The student body is divided into the Lower School (PreK - 4th Grade), the Middle School (5th grade - 8th grade) and the Upper School (9th grade - 12th grade). Located on a sixty-five-acre campus in the heart of Houston, Texas, the Kinkaid offers a thriving intellectual community in the midst of a vibrant, urban, and diverse culture.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Communicate with students, parents, faculty and staff to ensure a healthy school environment and assist in meeting the health needs of the general school population, as well as those of specific students with identified health needs.
Provide and facilitate first aid and emergency treatments which fall within the scope of the Registered Nurse Practice Act as required for students/staff/visitors as the need arises during the school year.
Assist in initiation and maintenance of electronic student health records, including but not limited to medication administration records, individual student treatment records, student health action plans.
Assist in the facilitation and completion of state required screening programs such as Vision and Hearing screenings, Scoliosis screenings and any others mandated by the state.
Assist with maintaining state immunization requirements
Assist with the regular checking and maintenance of all AED equipment, First Aid Equipment as assigned by the Director of Health Services.
Assist in the education of faculty and staff on administration of Epi-pens for students as needed related to Life Threatening Allergy Action Plans.
Assist in the education of faculty and staff on the management of students who have an identified health concern such as seizures, diabetes and/or asthma as needed.
Serve as a liaison between school personnel, the family and health care professionals as needed to ensure proper referral and follow up occurs for students
Assist in the education of unlicensed personnel as designated by Division Head or Head of School as requested by the Director of Health Services.
Assist with CPR scheduling/planning/training to faculty/staff and students
Field Trip preparation/planning and education to faculty/staff
Diabetic monitoring, following up and communication with family, faculty/staff; assist in creating an annual Individualized Health Plan and meeting with family annually to discuss Diabetic Medical Management Plan
Administer diagnostic testing (Strep, influenza and COVID) as needed
Perform and document weekly controlled medication count with another staff nurse
Health Promotion/Risk Prevention Education - Assist with the development, planning and implementation of Growth and Development Curriculum and other student health related education.
Assist with writing Health Center Policy based on current practice guidelines
Assist with planning and staffing of on-campus sports physical clinic
Carry out duties related to the health and safety of students as assigned by the Director of Health Services.
Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in Nursing
A valid registered nurse license to practice nursing in the State of Texas (R.N. required)
Minimum of 2 years of experience in school nursing
Additional Minimum of 2 years of experience in pediatric, emergency, mental health or community health nursing preferred
Current certification in Adult, Child CPR and AED use
Vision and Hearing certification, Scoliosis Screening certification preferred
Proficient verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to assess situations and act quickly
Proficiency in use of excel and electronic health records
