Job Overview

Sexual violence is a common problem on college campuses, with an estimated 20-25% of students experiencing unwanted sexual contact. Response to students is complex work, requiring specialized trauma training and expertise and the ability to know and navigate both university as well as off-campus systems of treatment, support, and adjudication. Care provided by an experienced licensed health professional such as a Clinical Social Worker considers the needs of the whole person and the transaction of the person with her or his environment. Understanding the environment within which a student is functioning, the clinician can empower the student to advocate for her or himself, as well as facilitate connecting with other resources on campus. Outreach, education, and training are an essential component of this position so that the university community is aware of resources for students. Primary prevention is enhanced by working with student groups to develop culturally relevant and promising programs that are guided by evidence-based prevention strategies, best practices, and student involvement. Recovery from the impact of sexual violence and other trauma is best when expert clinicians provide confidential multi-dimensional services. The Georgetown University Campus Climate Sexual Misconduct Survey conducted in 2016 identified several vulnerable populations. Health Education Services is building capacity to address primary prevention of sexual assault and response (direct services) to meet the needs of all students, including vulnerable populations, with targeted interventions, services, and education.

Work Interactions

The Associate Director of Sexual Violence Response and Prevention Services reports directly to the Director of Sexual Violence Response and Prevention Services within Health Education Services. They develop and implement initiatives, education and training to target the needs of students, including especially vulnerable populations in marginalized and minority communities; and work collaboratively with other health professionals in Health Education Services, campus partners, and a variety of off campus resources.

The Associate Director supervises the Interpersonal Violence Education and Training Specialist, who provides mandatory bystander training programming for all first year and transfer students as well as for upper class students who lead clubs and organizations.

The Associate Director provides direct confidential health and mental health counseling clinical services to students experiencing the impact of trauma in their lives, most likely in 1:1 setting in Health Education Services. Services provided are primarily for sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking. They also maintain close communication with campus partners for program development and implementation. Duties include:

• Provides direct confidential counseling services on all matters of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and related trauma impacting mental health; and provides crisis response to students; referring them to appropriate resources for health care, law enforcement, and legal services.
• Provides direct services and programs for health promotion and wellbeing/resilience skill building as well as sexual assault training and programming.
• Develops ways to engage minority and marginalized student populations to increase awareness and advocacy; and supports minority and marginalized populations through education, outreach, training and direct services.
• Works collaboratively with other health professionals in Health Education Services and on campus to coordinate care and resources.
• Cultivates peer educator initiatives, such as the Sexual Assault Peer Educators (SAPE).
• Recruits, trains, supervises and mentors Sexual Assault Peer Educators. Builds curricula for programs and training.
• Promotes a survivor-centric campus through programming, training, and education; and tailors training and educational programs to meet the needs of student organizations and their culture.
• Provides community education and promotes awareness about issues of sexual assault and primary prevention.
• Conducts educational and training workshops and presentations; and works with the Georgetown University community partners (e.g., Engelhard Project) to continue integrating academic coursework with reflection and knowledge of the issues that impact many of our students.
• Supports other Health Education Services programs as needed.

Qualifications

• Licensed clinical health professional
• Experienced educator - preference for 2 to 3 years of higher education experience
• Expert communicator and educator skills
• Experience on college campus providing confidential counseling services - preference for experience providing direct services and educational programs to diverse populations and marginalized communities
• Cross cultural competency - experience with diverse populations, intersectionality, multiple allies
• Experience with providing direct services and educational programs for health promotion and wellbeing/resilience skill building
