Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, counselors promote student success, provide preventive services, and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive counseling program that addresses academic, career, and personal/social development for all students. This job is anticipated to begin September 7, 2023 and end November 2, 2023.
Provide individual and small group counseling, addressing the developmental needs of students by designing curriculum for classroom counseling and small group guidance.
Consult with and counsels parents for the academic, career, and personal success of their children.
Consult with faculty on developmental issues which impact a student's performance in the classroom; educational planning; provide crisis intervention within the school setting, making appropriate referrals to outside agencies; interpret ability, achievement, career and vocational testing information; and develop drug/counseling outreach programs.
Counselors build deep relationships with students, families, and staff to foster a culture of community.Â
Maintain strong lines of communication with families about student progress, and go above and beyond to support and collaborate closely with teammates in the united pursuit of Labâ™s mission.Â
Counselors are expected to work a 40 hour work week and the required number of days as stipulated in the collective bargaining agreement. Additionally, they are expected to perform in accordance with the terms and conditions of the bargaining agreement between the University of Chicago and the Faculty Association.

Education, Experience, or Certifications:
Bachelorâ™s degree in counseling, psychology, education or related field required.
Master's degree in school counseling, social work, or related field required.
Experience: Â Â
Minimum three years of counseling experience required.Â
High school counseling experience preferred.
Working with a wide range of students with diverse backgrounds such as race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, learning abilities, class, language and nationality.
Illinois Professional Educator License with a Guidance endorsement or comparable license/certification preferred.
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
Knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion issues, and dynamics in the classroom and in developing healthy, supportive relationships with all students.
Strong knowledge of course subject matter required.
Knowledge of instructional methodologies required.
Strong knowledge of child development required.
Develop curricula, lesson plans, and assessment tools required.
Use standard productivity software (Google Workspace, calendar/schedule software, etc.) required.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Move in and around the classroom/building to interact with students, faculty, staff, parents, and other members of the community.
Move class-related equipment/tools, as appropriate, around school property.
When appropriate, escort children from one classroom to another, in and out of the building during arrival and dismissal, and in an emergency situation.
Demonstrate lessons, when appropriate.
Carry or lift loads of up to 25 lbs.
Sit for up to 2 hours.
Use computers extensively for up to 2 hours
Push/pull objects of up to 25 lbs.
Stand for up to 2 hours.
