The Opportunity
The Upper Division PE teacher is responsible for teaching physical education to grades 4-8 using a wide range of instructional tools and resources.
This is a 1.0 FTE salaried exempt full-time, benefits-eligible position that reports to the upper division head. The role is for the 2023-2024 school and begins August 23, 2023.

Duties and Responsibilities
Develop and implement a physical education curriculum and activities for students at varying levels of progress from grades 4 through 8. This includes creating schemes of work and lesson plans, identifying and selecting instructional resources and methods to meet students’ needs and preparing the classroom for activities.
Regularly assess students’ progress by observing and evaluating performance and development and providing appropriate feedback to students, their parents and colleagues. Generate narrative student evaluation reports twice a year (January and June).
Consistently communicate and document clear objectives for all learning activities to maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development in compliance with laws, school policies and accreditation standards.
Establish and enforce school rules for students with a positive style and strong classroom management skills.
Daily collaboration and coordination with the primary division PE teacher about shared spaces, resources, etc.
Attend school, department, team and parent/guardian meetings.
Participate in certain extracurricular events, such as social and sporting activities, admission events, clubs, overnight camps and student group activities. This will involve some evening, weekend and overnight work.
Maintain knowledge of and competency in relevant classroom technology, as well as passion for recent developments in teaching resources and methods with the flexibility to incorporate changes into instructional plans and activities.
Be strictly vigilant about student health and safety.
Maintain confidentiality in sensitive matters;

Two to three years’ experience teaching in a lead role
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with teaching credentials, preferably in physical education. A master’s degree and Washington state teaching certificate is preferred

Comfortable with student-centered learning spaces and techniques such as differentiated instruction, real world applications, and inquiry-based approaches
Familiar with teaching games for understanding model while also incorporating the teaching of sport-specific units
Able to incorporate techniques and strategies that grow the social and emotional learning of the students while also teaching physical education
Driven to teaching excellence with a firm grasp of teaching responsibilities and reflective about personal teaching practices
Positively support the school’s mission while managing the demands of curriculum and lesson planning, teaching, collaboration and parent communications
Establish a healthy rapport with students ages 8-14
Be empowered by a collaborative approach to working with a team of colleagues, sharing with and learning from one another
Have a demonstrated record of developing one’s own cultural competency
Have demonstrated success in working with people from diverse backgrounds and learning styles
Can draw from a variety of curriculum sources and be skilled in differentiating among students with clear methods to appropriately challenge highly capable students
Communicate clearly, effectively and comfortably with the independent school community including students, parents and colleagues both inside and outside the classroom. English is the primary language of the school
Be comfortable utilizing education technology applications in learning spaces
Respectfully maintain a high degree of confidentiality and integrity while exhibiting a professional manner and building constructive working relationships
Report to work at the scheduled time and seldom be absent from work
Complete work in a timely, accurate and thorough manner, and be conscientious about assignments and deadlines

Able to lift up to 35 pounds
Can frequently stand, walk, run, jump, throw, reach above the head and actively move for long periods of time
Able to teach inside and outside regardless of the weather on any given day

Position Details:
Salary Range: This position follows a 10-month work schedule while paid over 12 months. Teachers’ salaries are dependent upon education degree(s) and years of teaching experience and in the range of $64,460 to $131,061.
