Purpose: The lower and middle school physical education teacher is responsible for carrying out the mission of VMS through curriculum development, teaching, assessment, differentiation, classroom management, outdoor education, character development and building rapport with students in and out of the classroom. Our teachers support the mission and philosophy of the school, value the VMS culture, and strive to make our school a better place. They have a deep knowledge of their subject area, and display dedication, passion, and the capacity to help all students succeed. This position will also assist the Athletic Director with the coordination and implementation of sporting events.
What You Will Do:
Provide an instructional program for fifth through either grade which is interesting, relevant, challenging, and appropriate for the needs and abilities of Vail Mountain School students. You will also evaluate student progress in accordance with our assessment policies.
Provide general supervision of students at all times in the building (including lunch and recess)
Collaborate with all colleagues to provide the best possible experience for our students and community members
Participate in Board related events, as requested
Participate in orientation, field trips, hut trips, student activities, and Ski Days
Coordinate with the athletics department, lower school division director, and middle school division director to ensure appropriate integration, scope, sequence, and articulation of curriculum.
Actively participate in the development, implementation, and innovation of the physical education curriculum
Advocate for and ensure that diversity, inclusion, and social justice permeates the school's programs and drives its culture
Flexibility is key as you are working to determine your priorities on the fly. For example, you may determine that you should miss certain away games or practices to cover a different event that is understaffed.
As a middle school faculty member, you will be helping with seminar, advisory, and clubs. You will also be a secondary middle school homebase teacher.
As a member of the athletics department, you are expected to regularly attend athletic events that are outside of the school day.
Work directly with the athletic director to determine weekly priorities and engage in on-going communication to ensure support to all athletic events
Jump in to help when your team is in need. This might include covering classes, skiing or snowshoeing with students, hopping onto a field trip that needs to be covered

Comfortable driving 15 passenger vans and small buses.
Comfortable leading a class of students outside of a traditional classroom setting including a gymnasium, athletic field, and outdoor winter environments
Bachelor's Degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university
While you are unable to be a varsity head coach, assistant coaching is available upon the approval and at the discretion of the athletics director.
Experienced in lower and middle school athletics through teaching and/or coaching
Preference for experience with athletic scheduling and logistical planning
