Middle School Health Teacher/Upper School Counselor

Trinity School, a co-educational, K-12 institution located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, seeks a full-time Middle School Health Teacher/Upper School Counselor beginning September 2023.
As a Health Teacher, the faculty member in this role will teach required Middle School health classes and collaborate with the Health Department Head in supporting initiatives related to student health and wellness. Also serving as an Upper School Counselor, this role will provide short-term group counseling and activities related to mental well-being for Upper School students in collaboration with the Upper School Psychologist. This is a full-time position.
Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Teach Middle School health classes that are developmentally appropriate and meet the needs of a diverse student population;
Intentionally construct a safe and interactive classroom environment for students to discuss health topics including decision-making, body image, relationships, consent, substance use, and sexual health; and
Collaborate with colleagues to enhance and implement a health and social emotional curriculum for students. In particular, work closely with the Health Department Head to promote a positive, safe and healthy school environment.
In the Upper School, provide short-term group counseling and supportive activities in key areas of social-emotional development in teens, including stress management, navigating peer and adult relationships, forming identity, and adaptively resolving conflict;
Deliver mental health promotion activities for the Upper School student community that are inclusive and culturally responsive. In particular, work closely with the Upper School Psychologist to support the development of social, emotional, and mental wellness of Upper School students;
As needed, apply counseling and crisis intervention skills and consult with faculty and staff;
Maintain accurate records; and
Collaborate with divisional psychologists to identify student needs and help coordinate the provision of outside care and resources to support a child or family of concern.
The successful candidate will possess:
A dedication to working with Middle and Upper school students within the learning context;
A passion for the complexities of the social-emotional lives of children and adolescents;
An understanding of how culture and identity influence learning, health, and mental health;
An ability to work collaboratively and generously with colleagues, both on a team and across school divisions;
Complex decision-making skills, sound judgment, and a sensitivity to privacy concerns;
Strong communication skills, both written and public speaking;
Excellent classroom management skills; and
Excellent interpersonal skills, a flexible attitude, and a sense of humor.
New York State license or certificate in counseling, social work, psychology or relevant profession (LCSW, LMHC, etc.);
Prior experience working with Middle and Upper school students in both a teaching and counseling capacity; and
A degree or equivalent experience in health education.
