North Shore Country Day School, a JK-12 independent day school near Chicago, seeks a clinically trained individual to serve as our full-time Middle School Counselor. This is a 10-month/school year position, beginning with the 2023-24 school year. North Shore is eager to consider applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in independent school communities.
Successful fulfillment of this role requires someone who is: clinically astute; collaborative; highly flexible; a self-starter; creative; and adept at working within multiple client systems.
The role of the Middle School Counselor involves a wide range of responsibilities including:
Individual and group counseling for students
Collaboration and consultation with individual parents and parent groups
Collaboration and Consultation with faculty, staff, and administrators, as well as with Learning Resources
Public speaking (in the form of professional development for faculty; social-emotional education for parents; or facilitating or leading other evening and/or daytime programming)
Classroom teaching (limited) on various wellness topics
Classroom observations of students
Curriculum development for Advisory and other programming
Participation on the Student Support Team
Attendance/participation in weekly 6th, 7th, 8th grade team meetings and Counseling Department meetings
Referral to, and collaboration with, outside providers
Participating in extracurricular activities, including field trips
Supporting the overarching goals and objectives of the NSCDS Counseling Program and the school as a whole
Participation in Divisional EDI initiatives
Counselors are also on-call to provide support and/or crisis management to community members in the event of a need that arises in a different division, or, during a local, national, or international crisis (such as a school shooting, etc.) that impacts the community.
A minimum of an LCSW or an LMFT is required for this position. Working in a school, or other related experience, is valued but not required. This is a 40+ hour/week position, 5 days/week. As we are a school that values lifelong learning, professional development is supported and encouraged.
