Reporting to the Assistant Head of School, the School Counselor is a collaborative leader who consistently demonstrates a deep understanding of early years, lower school, and middle school-aged children. To promote a cohesive PS-8 program, the School Counselor actively collaborates with the Early Years Director, Lower School Director and Middle School Director regarding school-wide social-emotional health and wellness and promotes an emotionally positive community.
This is a new position for the School so we are looking for someone to help launch and create programming around it. The ideal candidate will be an experienced and dedicated professional who is able to communicate and collaborate with school administrators, classroom teachers, school staff, and parents and is committed to the mental and emotional health of children. Ideally, the selected candidate will have or eagerly develop connections to other social-emotional health professionals in Loudoun County.
The specific responsibilities of the School Counselor fall into two categories:
Direct Student Services including:
Counseling:Provide professional assistance and support to a student or a small group of students during times of transition, heightened stress, critical change or other situations impeding student success. Individual counseling would be provided on a short term basis only.
Instruction: Provide group/classroom/teacher guidance focusing on peer relationships, coping strategies, effective social skills, problem solving and conflict resolution as needed.
Indirect Student Services including:
Consultation:Share strategies with parents, teachers/staff, and division directors that will help support students.
Collaboration:Work with parents, teachers/staff, administrators, and community organizations to support students; Provide parent education.
Referrals:Make referrals for students and families to school/community resources and serve as a liaison to outside counselors who are working with our students and/or their families.
Specific expectations include
helping students work through difficult situations by providing short-term support and referrals for outside support, when appropriate,
designing and implementing data-informed programming, in collaboration with division directors, to meet the unique needs of the LCDS community,
assessing and prioritizing student and community needs in consultation with members of the leadership team,
working on campus and in person whenever school is in session and on designated work days and professional development days,
engaging with another qualified professional in the field for regular supervision,
employing a strong sense of integrity and embodying the core values and mission of LCDS,
performing other related duties as assigned, including but not limited to, carpool duty and occasional evening events.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will
hold, at minimum, a master's degree from an approved counselor education program,
meet Virginia state certification/licensure standards,
fulfill continuing education requirements,
uphold ASCA ethical and professional standards,
possess excellent written and verbal communication skills,
have training and experience conducting risk assessments, crisis intervention, and interventions specific to anxiety, emotional regulation, and stress management,
excel at working collaboratively as a member of a team,
have counseling experience in an educational setting with lower and middle school students,
believe in and exhibit commitment to cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community,
be a good listener and a warm and welcoming member of the community.

LCDS is situated in Leesburg, Virginia. Located in Loudoun County in Northern Virginia, the school is about 35 miles from DC.
