GENERAL SUMMARY: Roland Park Country School is seeking a full-time Lower School Counselor/Wellness Teacher. The Lower School Counselor/Wellness Teacher provides short-term, individual and/or group counseling to students in grades K-5. Roland Park’s school-counseling program provides emotional, social, and behavioral support for all students. The program is designed to help students develop skills in such areas as values clarification, character education, emotional resiliency, stress management, building healthy relationships, decision-making, self-awareness, and communication.
The Lower School Counselor/Wellness Teacher is responsible for supporting the social and emotional needs of students in grades K-5, managing crisis situations, and establishing and developing a curriculum to teach wellness to students in K-5. The Lower School Counselor/Wellness Teacher will work in collaboration and partnership with the Director of Counseling. The Lower School Counselor/Wellness Teacher must be able to work independently and as part of a highly motivated team.
This is a 10-month, 40 hour a week position, with an effective start date of August 15, 2023. The Lower School Counselor/Wellness Teacher reports directly to the Director of Counseling. Additionally, this position performs under the general direction of the Lower School Head.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide individual and group counseling services on an as needed, short-term basis and make recommendations for outside mental health and therapeutic support if needed
Create and teach curriculum that is developmentally and age appropriate in grades K-5 wellness classes
Identify students in need, assess their level of need, refer to appropriate services, and follow up to monitor student’s response to interventions
Provide crisis assessment and management for lower school students and collaborate with community mental health providers
Conduct small group and large group presentations, and other educational programming for students, faculty, and parents/guardians
Understand child mandated reporting laws and report to child protective services concerns of child abuse and neglect
Consult and collaborate with parents, guardians, and outside treatment providers
Meet regularly with the Lower School leadership team to carry out the institutional goals for supporting wellness, socio-emotional learning, and mental health.
Work with teachers and administrators to address concerns about the social and emotional welfare of students.
Participate and attend lower school team meetings and grade level meetings.
Meet with other divisional counselors to collaborate on and assist in strategizing student needs and programming.
Develop, facilitate, and collaborate with Director of Counseling on social/emotional prevention education
Facilitate peer education program in the Lower School which trains upper school students to teach wellness classes to students in upper, middle, and lower schools
Collaborate with school teams including learning specialists, grade level deans, DEI specialists, school administrators, and Head of School.
Serve on divisional and campus wide committees as needed.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Holds, at minimum, a master’s degree in school counseling or a related field.
Meets Maryland state certification and/or licensure standards in school counseling or a related field.
Minimum of 2-4 years of experience working with children and families.
Teaching experience required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
·Remain in a stationary position, often sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
Repeat motion of wrists, hands, and fingers to operate standard office equipment, such as computer and phone.
Requires visual acuity to read a variety of written materials.
Bending at the waist, kneeling, squatting, crouching, or lifting objects up to 30 pounds in all directions.
Must be able to move around and access all parts of the campus upon request, which includes gym, turf, fields, dining hall, etc.
Occasionally ascend and descend stairs in emergency cases.
WORK CONDITIONS:
Desired start date is Aug 15, 2023
Ten-month, full-time, exempt position.
The Lower School Counselor/Wellness Teacher is expected to perform their job duties on campus, unless otherwise permitted by the Head of School.
