Position Description:
Wye River Upper School is reviewing applications for a qualified and compassionate School Counselor. Our School Counselor will be responsible for advising and counseling students regarding academic, educational, and short-term social and emotional problems. The School Counselor will be universally accessible and provide individual student planning and responsive services to support students and their families regarding emotional matters. The candidate of choice applies a personal and professional growth mindset; they inspire others to do the same through optimism, flexibility, and teamwork. The selected candidate should want to contribute to the school community by sharing their passions and participating in school functions, professional development, field trips, and other special activities.
We are searching for a School Counselor for the current 2022-2023 school year. The School Counselor will work closely with the Learning Specialist and Director of Student Services.

Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:
Professional Responsibilities:
Compliance with WRUS policies/procedures as stated in the personnel handbook
Regular and punctual attendance
Participation in staff meetings
Completion of non-teaching duties, including lunch and trips
Involvement in school-wide events, including assemblies, open houses, Back to School Night, etc.
Participation in regular goal-setting, reflection, and professional growth opportunities
Communication with therapists and other outside professionals that work with WRUS students
An enthusiastic and robust work ethic and a team player, and self-starter
Instruction & Curriculum:
Alignment with WRUS mission, philosophy, and program goals
Collaboration with teachers and Dean of Students in the creation and implementation of social-emotional curriculum for students (both formal and informal)
Observation of individual students in the classrooms to assist the teachers in supporting students with social and/or emotional needs
Collaboration with teachers and the Director of Student Services to modify/adapt the social-emotional curriculum to meet the needs of students
Individual and small group meetings with students to address various needs (friendship, anxiety, anger, etc.)
Co-teaching in the classroom when appropriate on social-emotional learning topics
Purchasing supplies/materials to support student learning using the allotted budget
Assessment & Feedback:
Review of Student Support Plans for students with social-emotional needs
Attendance of student conferences when appropriate
Collaboration & Communication
Consultation with teachers on the interpretation of diagnostic testing, use of medications, etc.
Ongoing communication with families of students with social-emotional issues
Assistance for families in finding appropriate outside support
Collaboration with Enrollment Team in reviewing student files (as applicable)
Collaboration with teachers and Director of Student Services on homework load, grade-level expectations, etc.
Collaboration with colleagues on school-wide initiatives
Parent education around parenting, common developmental issues, and supporting students with social-emotional needs
