Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer at The School, the Registered Nurse (RN) will collaborate with the Division Heads. The RN will serve as a liaison between teachers, students, family, community, and healthcare providers. The RN will assess student health, provide interventions, develop and execute plans for care management, act as first responders, and engage in public health functions such as disease surveillance, immunization compliance, and health promotion/education. The RN will be responsible and accountable for chronic and acute illness, as well as injuries in the school setting, follow up with students and their families, and advocate for further care/monitoring as needed. The Registered Nurse will work closely with The School???s Medical Director and Social Worker.
Responsibilities
Triages of complaints using critical assessment skills to include crisis intervention and acute and chronic medical problems.
Partner with other Nurses in the Health Care Office.
The daily routine of treatment and medication administration, recording complaints with NYC and NYS requirements.
Communication of pertinent medical and health information per child, in accordance with HIPPA or FERPA guidelines.
Yearly tracking of student health issues to be compliant with NYC and NYS and for internal data collection.
Supply nurse's office, medical backpacks, and classrooms
Arrange for lice checks for students and flu vaccines for staff and faculty
Initiate CPR First Aid certification for teachers (optional and mandatory)
Refer children and families for further clinical evaluation and medical care follow-up.
Implement Health precautions per university directives.
Provide health-related information to children and/or parents as directed by the principals
Oversee Emergency Response Protocols.
Represent The School at events where medical personnel receive information and training.
Consult with Medical Director, as appropriate regarding difficult cases, public health, and other issues
Proactively provide the Chief Operating Officer with updates regarding pressing health issues.
Additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Current New York State RN License required.
Minimum 2 years of related medical experience required.
Ability to make each child and family feel that their health is a priority for The School.
Successful candidates must be able to guide families with wisdom, warmth, and intelligence and work cooperatively with faculty, staff, parents, and students, and hold high professional standards.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree Preferred. Experience as a nurse working with children, specifically in K-8.
Fluency in Spanish is a major advantage in working with The School's students and families. The successful candidate will be a self-starter capable of working with minimal oversight to solve problems or complete projects. Excellent oral and written communication skills are a must. Attention to detail, plus the ability to work closely and effectively with a diverse group of administrators, teachers, and staff are essential.
