Roland Park Country School is seeking a full-time Upper School Counselor. The Upper School Counselor provides short-term, individual and/or group counseling to students in grades 9-12. Roland Park’s school-counseling program provides emotional, social, and behavioral support for all students.  The program is designed to help students develop skills in such areas as values clarification, character education, emotional resiliency, stress management, building healthy relationships, decision-making, self-awareness, and communication. 

 The Upper School Counselor is responsible for supporting the social and emotional needs of students in grades 9-12, managing crisis situations, and establishing and developing a curriculum to teach wellness and life skills to students in 9-12. The Upper School Counselor will work in collaboration and partnership with the current Director of Counseling.  The Upper School Counselor must be able to work independently and as part of a highly motivated team.

This is a 10-month, 40 hour a week position, for the 2022-2023 school year beginning in August 2022. The Upper School Counselor reports directly to the Director of Counseling and performs under the general direction of the Head of Upper School.

Primary responsibilities:

• Provide individual and group counseling services on an as needed, short-term basis and make recommendations for outside mental health and therapeutic support if needed
• Identify students in need, assess their level of need, refer to appropriate services, and follow up to monitor student’s response to interventions
• Provide crisis assessment and management for upper school students and collaborate with community mental health providers
• Conduct small group and large group presentations, and other educational programming
• Create and teach curriculum that is developmentally and age appropriate in wellness and life skill classes
• Understand child mandated reporting laws and report to child protective services concerns of child abuse and neglect
• Consult and collaborate with parents, guardians, and outside treatment providers
• Meet regularly with the Upper School leadership team to carry out the institutional goals for supporting wellness, socio-emotional learning and mental health
• Work with teachers and administrators to address concerns about the social and emotional welfare of students
• Participate and attend upper school team meetings and grade level meetings
• Meet with other divisional counselors to collaborate on and assist in strategizing student needs and programming
• Develop, facilitate, and collaborate with Director of Counseling on social/emotional prevention education
• Facilitate peer education program in the Upper School which trains upper school students to teach wellness classes to students in upper, middle, and lower school
• Collaborate with school teams including learning specialists, grade level deans, DEI specialists, school administrators, and Head of School
• Serve on divisional and campus wide committees as needed

Core Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Counseling or Social work
• Fully licensed by the state of Maryland (LCPC, LCSW-C)
• Minimum of 3 years of experience working with upper school students
• Experienced in the classroom preferred
• Strong intercultural competencies with demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
