Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in North Seattle, is currently recruiting for a School Counselor. This counselor will be familiar with schools and have clinical experience in working individually with students. The school counselor is an important element of the web of support we provide to students grades 5-12 at Lakeside School. They will be part of a 4-person team in the middle and upper school counseling program and provide short term 1:1 and small group support to address student social-emotional and developmental needs. The counselor will strive to make both the Middle School and Upper School counseling spaces inviting, fun and helpful; places where all students feel welcome.
This is a 1.0 FTE position beginning mid-August 2022.
Responsibilities
The counselor position includes the following responsibilities:
- Provide short term 1:1 and small group culturally responsive counseling support to students grades 5-12 to help them with developmental and social-emotional needs including self-regulation and awareness, social problem-solving, self-care, and stress management. This includes meeting with students as scheduled, supervising and supporting students who drop into the counseling office, keeping records of student meetings, and offering outside referrals when applicable.
- Provide crisis intervention and safety assessments according to the school’s safety protocol.
- Facilitate the academic accommodations process and provide ongoing case management for students with documented qualifying mental health diagnoses.
- Provide responsive services such as consultation with faculty, staff, advisors, families, and outside providers about student needs and concerns.
- Be an active and engaged member of the counseling team. This includes collaborating and consulting with members of the counseling team, working to share student caseload, and to create and maintain an open and inviting atmosphere in the counseling center including intentionality in appealing to different and diverse groups of students.
- Be an active and engaged member of the Student Support Team. This includes attending and participating in weekly Students Support Team meetings to discuss students in need of support, following through on relevant action items, and collaborating and consulting with members of the Student Support Team as needed.
- Engage in the co-curricular and extra-curricular life of the school to be known and recognized by students
- Provide education on culturally relevant social-emotional topics to students, faculty and staff, and families in small groups as well as in larger meetings.
- Stay up-to-date on relevant professional development with an emphasis on issues of multiculturalism, intersectionality, and diversity in counseling.
- Keep current with laws governing confidentiality as they pertain to adolescents and mental health services in schools.
Requirements and Qualifications
- An advanced degree in counseling, school counseling with a clinical focus, psychology or social work (or related field), and licensed or license eligible
- Training and experience with a range of diagnostic and treatment options for a diverse middle and high school population. Experience with adolescents in an educational setting and/or counseling centers is preferred, though those with experience that has focused on early college or late elementary school years also are encouraged to apply
- Training and experience with safety and risk assessment
- A strong foundation in culturally responsive counseling including: an understanding of social & historical context of counseling, facility with cross-cultural dynamics, familiarity with cross-cultural counseling research, and a strong commitment to ongoing professional and personal development in this area
- Ability to balance independent work and self-management while also working in a multidisciplinary team and the ability to maintain a sense of humor and see the positive in challenging situations
- Ability to connect with adolescents while maintaining appropriate boundaries and the ability to generate and implement creative and innovative ideas for engaging and working with students
- Strong attention to detail, written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to communicate information about complex student information in a respectful and clear manner
- Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidates will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
- Candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks
