JOB SUMMARY
Reporting directly to the Middle School Director, the Physical Education Teacher / Department Chair (Grades 6-12) and Middle School Wellness and Outdoor Education Coordinator is responsible for teaching Physical Education (Grades 6-12) and supporting the Middle School Administration in creating a positive school culture through meaningful play, sport, and physical activities, with a focus on the value of these activities in building a compassionate and respectful culture that reflects the New Roads core values and commitments. This position works to sustain the climate and culture, within and across grade levels, in which all students can thrive in a generative, compassionate, and empathic, and collaborative community as well as develop a foundation for wellbeing and leadership. This position also works collaboratively with the Athletic Director to help students to build a foundation for wellness and life skills through exercise, nutrition, and athletics and to create a culture of excellence and discipline in athletics.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Physical Education Teaching and Department Coordination

Assume primary responsibility of engaging students in physical education and physical wellbeing programming that support student growth and development and life skills

Teach PE and Wellness classes at the middle school level to ensure students participating in Middle School sports are building foundational athletic skills

Provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for students
-
Organize games and challenges that promote physical activity
-
Develop motor skills and physical and mental development
-
Teach developmentally appropriate classes in a safe and nurturing environment
-
Teach cooperative games and skills for traditional sports
-
Provide meaningful feedback to students about their skill development
-
Responsible for instructional planning, including, but not limited to, providing written lesson plans for the 6th-12th Grade P.E. program
-
Meet with 6th-12th grade physical education teachers and provide leadership within the curriculum in collaboration with the Director of Athletics
-
Consistently work to update curriculum with best practices 6th-12th grade
-
Implement instructional methods of the P.E. curriculum
-
Ability to establish positive learning expectation standards for all students
-
Assess student progress and maintain current and accurate records of students' achievements
-
Establish and maintain reasonable rules of conduct for students while on campus and off campus
-
Maintain accurate attendance records
-
Encourage student growth in self-discipline and positive self-concept
-
Initiates appropriate conferences or meetings when necessary with parents/guardians and administrators in accordance with school procedures

Participates in in-service meetings and professional staff meetings
-
Coordinate and attend class field trips as needed
-
May work in extra-curricular and after-school activities
-
Prepare for and clean up after class activities and in shared teaching spaces

Care and store all equipment
Wellness and Outdoor Education Coordinator
-
Oversee the scheduling of overnight, class trips and grade level activities/events,
-
Work closely with the athletic department to promote and encourage student athletes and family participation.

Integrate well-being into the culture and climate of the Middle School-- ensuring students uphold the values of the New Roads mission statement and philosophy during less structured parts of the day
-
Work alongside faculty and administration to supervise students during passing periods, recess, lunch, and after school programming.

Collaborate with Middle School Dean of Students to develop and carry out the rituals, rites, and traditions of the Middle School
-
Support the Middle School Admin Team with students that require behavioral intervention strategies
-
In collaboration with the Middle School Dean of Students, develop a robust Outdoor Education and Leadership strand throughout the entire Middle School division
Families
-
Establish and build relationships with families, and create opportunities for students and families to grow closer to the school i.e. NRS Spirit events, family game nights, movie nights, etc.

Build enthusiasm for a culture of excellence in athletics
Admissions and Other Duties
-
Assist in any/all duties relating to teachers, students, and families during admissions season.

Attend any/all admissions, outreach, on-campus/remote events to engage with parents
-
Participate in committee work, faculty meetings, parent coffees and additional duties as assigned.

Substitute classes when necessary
-
Work with Director of Athletics to coordinate alignment of physical education and athletic program

Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum of 5+ years teaching experience
-
Bachelor’s Degree

Ability to maintain confidential information

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Strong organizational and time management skills

Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with various departments, colleagues, and families
