This is a 30 hour per week, 9 month, benefit eligible, Civil Service position.
Starting pay rate: $20.61 per hour
Mission: Responsible for the continued development and growth of risk reduction prevention education and well-being programming for the UMD campus through Health Service’s Health Education department. This includes collaborating with Health Services and with other campus departments and the Duluth community, and monitoring and advocating for the safety and health of the campus community.
Prevention and Risk Reduction Education: 60%
Assist in preparation, implementation and evaluation of classroom presentations utilizing a harm reduction approach to be delivered in classes on campus and in the community, conferences and meetings
Provide prevention and risk reduction education to UMD student groups and classrooms, area high school students and parents related to: Sexual Health, Sexual Violence Prevention, Alcohol/Drugs, and other topics identified. Components may include, but are not limited to: comprehensive sex education, communication skills and drug/alcohol risk reduction strategies
Serve as a guest speaker in classrooms, conferences and meetings on campus and in the community on health related issues.
Peer Health Education: 10%
Interview, select, train, advise and mentor two Peer Education Programs: the Sexual Health Peer Educators and the Drug/Alcohol Peer Educators.
Develop marketing and educational messaging, with the technical and creative support of a student graphic designer, for campaigns which supplement departmental, campus and administrative prevention and health promotion programs. This may include, but is not limited to: posters, social media, digital displays, and other technologies offered via the campus.
Coordinate presentation requests
Assist in research related to prevention and well-being initiatives. This includes the development and delivery of survey tools to assess community needs and satisfaction.
Co-interview, co-supervise and work with Health Education interns, graphic artists, and student workers.
Represent Health Services on University committees as requested
Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of health education programs
Attend all staff meetings, retreats and appropriate in services
Abide by the Health Services Expectations for Professional Behavior
Required Qualifications: BA/BS degree or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least 4 years. May require health care certification, registration, or state licensure.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Public Health, Community Health Promotion or related field with a minimum of 3 years working with adolescent or college age individuals in a service, educational or advocacy setting.
