The shared school counselor is a critical position for the Los Encinos School and Westland School communities. Each of these schools is seeking a part-time counselor who is deeply invested in the work of honoring the whole child, supporting families, and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice at the institutional, cultural, interpersonal, and personal levels of our school communities. This position reports to a designated school administrator (Los Encinos: Assistant Head of School; Westland: Assistant Head of School) and collaborates often with the full administrative team and the teachers. The position begins July 1, 2021.
Los Encinos School, located in the heart of Encino on Ventura Boulevard, is relatively small in size -- one classroom per grade with two teachers and an assistant for grades K-6 -- yet huge in its commitment to each individual child. Ever since the school was founded in 1980, the philosophy has been focused on helping its diverse student population achieve success, knowing that each child is unique. The program offers rigorous academics integrated with a rich arts and humanities curriculum that includes drama and music. Students are emboldened with STEAM projects and bring the array of skills to life in the new makerspace lab. P.E. and intramural sports round out the day. In addition, service learning and a schoolwide “Virtues & Values” initiative are huge components. Los Encinos School prides itself on creating learners who love to learn, can problem-solve, and are first and foremost good people.
Westland School, located in Los Angeles in the Santa Monica Mountains on Mulholland Drive, is a K-6 school with 130 students. Founded in 1949 on developmental and progressive principles, the school has a social studies core curriculum with specialist classes in the arts, science, woodworking, gardening, printing, dance, and a commitment to community involvement, environmental stewardship, diversity, equity and inclusivity. The tight-knit school community is noted for its vitally involved parents and its collaborative faculty and staff. The two-acre campus, which provides a natural setting with trees and gardens, stimulates learning and nurtures childhood.
