Lynnhaven Academy is looking for an enthusiastic leader and positive role model to help begin our newly created PE and Athletics Department for middle and upper school students. Candidates should have five or more years of PE or related teaching experience. This position requires coaching at least two or more sports offered by the school. Ideal candidates will have a track record of being passionate advocates for their students, effective classroom managers, and cultivators of the “growth mindset.” They must also demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills, a commitment to being a collaborative, valued colleague, and a history of engaging in opportunities to support their ongoing professional development. While coaching experience is welcome in all sports, we are specifically looking for experience in Cross Country, Track and Field, Soccer, and Golf. A degree in PE and experience working in a school or similar setting and Head Varsity Coaching experience is highly preferred. The PE teacher reports directly to the Head of School and plays an integral role in growing our athletics program and school spirit.
PE TEACHER ESSENTIAL SKILLS
Demonstrate knowledge of and the ability to use research-based principles of effective instruction.
Organize instruction using learning objectives with clearly defined student outcomes
Employ teaching strategies congruent with planned student outcomes
Select teaching strategies emphasizing student involvement and hands on activities
Monitor student learning and pace instruction as prescribed by the Dean of Teaching and Learning or designated staff
Develop and maintain an environment conducive to effective student learning
Develop written rules of classroom behavior and communicate those rules to all students
Enforce written rules for classroom behavior
Communicate course goals and academic expectations to students
Provide for the health and safety of the student in all instructional settings
Prepare effectively for class
Prepare daily lesson plans
Provide instruction predicated on course goals objectives, aligned with Lynnhaven’s adopted standards
Develop and communicate appropriate grading standards to students
Establish written grading standards that are clear and incorporate a variety of graded activities
Assure that grading standards are explained and available to parents
Develop and maintain positive interpersonal relationships
Model personal behaviors of honesty, fairness, courtesy consideration, respect, and cultural awareness and responsibility
Maintain a cooperative relationship with administration, staff, students and parents
Share appropriate information with parents and with other staff members that promotes positive interpersonal relationships
Provide documentation of students’ progress
Provide timely and accurate feedback/documentation to students, parents, and appropriate staff members
Maintain appropriate records of student performance
Build motivation and interest in learning
Exhibit personal interest and encourage student interest in the subject area
Maintain current awareness of the subject area
Maintain an ongoing personal program of professional growth and development
Develop and implement annually an approved plan for professional growth and development
Identify and request to attend professional workshop activities intended to increase the teacher’s instructional effectiveness
Participate in Lynnhaven sponsored in service offerings appropriate to assignment

Use techniques and methodologies appropriate to student abilities
Utilize current and relevant subject matter
Maintain a high altitude and attitude of helping in the total Lynnhaven atmosphere and experience.
Director of Athletics Description
The Director of Athletics is responsible for developing Lynnhaven Academy’s athletic program within the framework of Lynnhaven’s Mission, Vision, and Sassafras 7. The Director of Athletics is a member of the school’s Senior Leadership Team and responsible for helping to realize the short- and long-term strategic vision of the school. The Director of Athletics will work closely with each Dean, serving on their leadership teams, and with the physical education, department to promote skills aligned with the sports program. The Director of Athletics is also responsible for the orientation, acculturation, development, organization, supervision, and evaluation of Lynnhaven’s athletic and physical education programs as well as coaches. In addition, the Director of Athletics is responsible for the hiring, evaluation, and supervision of all coaches. In consultation with the Head of School, he/she/they will prepare, submit and administer a budget each year to fund the athletic programs of the school. The Director of Athletics will also collaborate with the Director of Admissions to promote Lynnhaven’s athletic program through the website, print, and additional media.
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Uphold the climate, culture, and values of Lynnhaven-- its mission statement, vision, philosophy, and Sassafrass 7
Introduce and build a culture of “excellence in Athletics” as well as 6-12 rituals/traditions and integrates the department into all aspects of the school
Provide guidance and direction for Lynnhaven’s’ Athletics Program, ensuring the highest quality of coaching
Has a vision of the future of the athletics program at Lynnhaven and communicates her/his/ vision effectively to the Senior Leadership Team, the coaching staff, parents, and other stakeholders
Develops a strategic, time-bound, and measurable plan for the growth and development of the athletics program
Develops unique programming alongside the Leadership Team that are signature to Lynnhaven, focusing on leadership, wellbeing, and life skills development
Works with the Director of Admission to ensure that regular information is available to the school community and posted on the website for the external community and that the philosophy and successes of the program are communicated to increase school pride and unity in being a Lynx
In collaboration with the Head of School, prepares budgets, aligned with strategic priorities, organize team travel, equipment purchases, and facility upkeep
Provides transportation to and from contests.
Develops partnerships with local parks and schools as a means to leverage facility space
Attends League Meetings as necessary for the school- collaborating with conferences and leagues about scheduling issues
Conduct orientation for new coaches on Lynnhaven’s climate, culture, and coaching model, based on its philosophy
Availability on occasional weekends for open houses, contests, and planning
Required qualifications to effectively perform the job at the time of hire will include an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Additional requirements and/or substitutions may be requested and require the approval of Head of School
Bachelor's degree or higher in Physical Education, related field, or equivalent experience.
Experience working at an independent school is preferred, but not required.
