The IDEAL School of Manhattan is seeking an inspiring, confident, warm, and experienced full-time school counselor to work with students in Grades 6-12 and in IDEAL’s Next Steps Transition Program.
The IDEAL candidate will:
Provide all mandated counseling with Middle/High School students—individual and group
Work with students on an as-needed basis to provide individual and group counseling
Communicate proactively and responsively with families about social-emotional issues and counseling
Assess students and develop appropriate treatment goals and supporting documentation
Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop practices and programming that supports the development of respectful, confident, and kind children and a culture of respect within the community
Work effectively to resolve conflicts to the benefit of all involved
Partner with Division Head and Head of School in all matters related to students’ emotional health and development
Support teachers with addressing social-emotional issues in the classroom
Stay current in best practices, articles, and research and possess a strong understanding of all aspects of the social and emotional development of children in grade six through grade twelve
Work closely with Upper School leadership team to plan age-appropriate family education evenings
Create lessons for advisory on boundaries, social-emotional health, conflict resolution, and other topics essential to the confidence and mental health of Middle and High School students
Support the school in responding to external events by providing resources for teachers and families and working with students
Work with teachers and advisors to develop and implement lessons on current events as needed

Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively and positively with students, parents, faculty, and staff
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and organizational skills
Undergraduate degree in appropriate field; a Master’s in Social Work; LCSW, required; licensed in the State of New York; and at least three years’ experience, preferably in a school setting
