The Grades K-12 School Counselor is a full-time position. This vacancy is for the 2021-22 academic year. The person in this role must be an experienced, caring professional who has a passion for supporting children. This position has many duties related to the implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program.
Implement the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Curriculum collaboratively with teachers and health/guidance professionals and teach weekly lessons on corresponding topics
Collaborate with teachers on Cultural Competence Curriculum lessons and activities
Consult with teachers about strategies for specific students
Conduct student observations as requested by teachers
Participate in weekly support team meetings to assess the overall progress, identify social/emotional and academic strengths and challenges, and recommend appropriate supports for individual students
Provide small group support to students on a variety of social-emotional/psychological topics
Provide short-term counseling support for individual students, as needed
Confer with parents, provide referrals when appropriate
Consult with outside therapists, as needed, to support individual students and families
Attend special events for grades K-12
Present at parent coffees for grades K-12, as needed
Provide recommendations of outside resources, as needed
Serve as school liaison for parent forums
Plan and implement parent education opportunities, in collaboration with the counseling team
Meet regularly with division heads to communicate student progress and/or concerns
Attend weekly faculty meetings
Attend appropriate divisional professional development workshops
Perform other duties as assigned
Masters’ degree with formal training in both mental health and education
Experience working in a school is preferred
Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with other teachers, support staff, parents and members of the community
Ability to identify and solve problems, effectively and efficiently, after considering a broad range of internal, external and regulatory factors
Excellent communication skills required (both orally and in writing), maintaining open channels and exemplifying strong customer service skills
Ability to maintain sensitive information in the strictest of confidence, exercising absolute discretion and professionalism
