The Lower School PE Teacher will teach classes of 20 children on average, alongside the assistant PE teacher. The successful applicant will work as part of the Physical Education Department and act as the Lower School faculty member responsible for providing an early childhood PE program that focuses on developing the movement skills, social emotional skills and conceptual understandings for developing lifelong learners. Summary of Major Responsibilities: - To ensure the health and safety of children (4-7-year-olds) in the gym, on the playground and in the swimming pool.
- Teach Lower School children (4-7-year-olds) in small and large groups, within the lower school PE curriculum, movement classes and activities intended to promote physical, social and emotional development.
- Planning and preparing lessons aligned with early childhood philosophy and best practices.
- Complete report cards and host conferences with families.
- Liaise with other members of grade level teaching teams, learning specialists and administration to develop high quality and responsive instruction for all learners.
- Create an environment for learning that is safe and engaging.
- Regularly communicate with the school community about the goals and progress of the early childhood program.
- Attend all team meetings and all relevant faculty meetings
- Engage in curricular and pedagogical professional development opportunities on and off campus.
- Establish professional goals each year.
- Participate actively in the life of the School, through attendance at events, committee membership and leadership of extracurricular activities.
- Any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job, as requested by the Lower School Principal/Assistant Principal.
Essential qualifications/experience: - Substantive experience working with young children
- Prior experience as a physical education teacher
- Ability to work in a collaborative team-teaching environment
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development activities
- Ability to take initiative and to make professional judgments regarding student welfare, communication, logistics, and use of educational materials and methods
Desirable qualifications/experience: - Experience of advanced coursework in education
- A sound understanding of the US style curriculum and Reggio Emilia philosophy
- Knowledge and understanding of international/American and/or independent school communities
