The School Nurse will oversee the health offices at both school campuses. The position also promotes an optimal level of wellness for the MSNV community. The Nurse is responsible for maintaining health records and seeing to the health and wellness needs of the students and school staff. The Nurse will work in partnership with administration and staff in matters pertaining to school health and wellness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties will include, but are not limited to:
Ensure the safety of students and employees by promoting effective health practices.
In coordination with the Head of School, develops and administers the school’s health services program; follows procedures, protocols, and other instructions provided by Head of School or contained in manuals and protocols.
Be involved in various discussions and committees regarding COVID-19 discussions/planning.
Works closely with the Head of School to execute the Health Mitigation Plan for COVID-19 protocols and procedures.
Acts as point person with Health department for COVID-19
Communicate with parents and employees about sick or injured students.
Provide ongoing health information to students, parents, and school employees as needed. Work with the Head of School on weekly communications on the status of the health of community during COVID.
Utilize existing health resources to provide appropriate care of students.
Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases through immunization review, early detection, surveillance, and reporting of contagious diseases.
Monitor for allergies and infectious diseases during the school day.
Maintain medications and first aid kits in the school office and classrooms.
Administer medications at appropriate times.
Assesses the health needs of students by observation, screening programs, and referral procedures and provides intervention as needed.
Establishes and maintains standards of emergency care to minimize the effects of accidents and illness in the school.
Supports school attendance for children who must use medication in the treatment of illness and chronic disabilities with medical knowledge and skills.
Maintains daily health office records and prepares other required reports.
Serves as a resource for the school staff and community on health-related matters.
Provides care for medically-involved and medically-fragile students.
Interprets health status and/or medical findings to the student’s family, and school personnel as necessary.
Presents and trains staff in coordination with the Head of School on health and wellness procedures/protocols
Member of school safety/crisis team.
Performs other health and wellness related duties.
Functions as a contributing member of the school staff in all aspects of the school program.
Identifies and reports suspected child abuse or neglect to the Head of School.
Communicates with Head of School as health situations arise that require administrative decisions. Makes recommendations and works as part of the decision-making team.
Develops and provides health and wellness educational programming for students on as needed basis.
Provides consultation and referral to students’ primary medical care providers for evaluation with treatment and follow-up, if necessary, for suspected health problems.
Reports compliance with state laws requiring immunization and exclusion of students with contagious diseases.
Encourages each student and staff to be a health-educated person, and a knowledgeable health consumer.
Improves school health and wellness through research and continuing education.
Attends school, community, and professional meetings as requested.
Registered Nurse or equivalent; BSN a plus.
Maintains in good standing appropriate licensing organizations and/or membership associations
Proficient in using the latest versions of Microsoft Suite products, email and web searches, and Google Apps.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with individuals in person and on the telephone.
Ability to manage multiple projects and work assignments with little supervision.
Excellent organization, initiative and independent judgement.
Must be able to obtain and maintain required background checks.
Must display independent judgment and strong organizational skills.
Ability to handle confidential information as it relates to students and school.
Ability to communicate with emergency personnel.
Ability to communicate with the Health Department as needed.
Communicate effectively both orally and written with parents, staff, and other professionals.
Must understand and enjoy a child-centered environment.
Must not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor related to abuse, neglect, or exploitation of children or adults.
