The school nurse’s primary function is to promote health and safety in the Heilicher community. The school nurse provides health services to students, faculty, and staff within the scope of practice, and refers to appropriate health professionals as needed. The school nurse collaborates with parents, teachers, community practitioners and local agencies to ensure a healthy school climate and to minimize absence due to illness and injury.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide urgent care in case of sudden illness and administer first aid in case of injury to students or staff according to established policies and protocols
COVID Coordinator; will work with staff, students/families, school leadership and local health officials to address and coordinate concerns and efforts of COVID-19.
Will lead communication with local health officials regarding contact tracing.
Help prevent and control communicable disease through assessment, exposure notification, exclusion and return to school of students and staff in keeping with federal and state law
Manage special medical issues including dispensing prescription medications according to physician treatment plans and maintenance of student health alerts and emergency interventions for severe allergy prophylaxis and other significant medical conditions
Maintain first aid and emergency supplies for the school
Coordinate with teachers to ensure that needed medications for students are
collected, organized and accompany students on all field trips
Be available and effectively collaborate with students, parents, and staff members on matters pertaining to the health, safety and attendance of students
Coordinate the school’s emergency operations plan, supplies and preparedness efforts, including drills and emergency supplies
Collect, organize and maintain student health forms and medical files
Liaison between the school and the larger community, especially working with the health department to ensure compliance in regards to immunizations and communicable diseases
Prepare and submit health, safety and immunization reports as required by federal
and state law and as requested
Ensure that school’s health policies and procedures are up to date, in compliance, and posted in the Family Resource Guide
Organize and facilitate regular lice checks and follow up of all students in primary and middle school in the fall and after all extended scheduled school breaks.
Present health-related instruction as part of the school’s comprehensive health education curriculum, including topics related to nutrition, health, hygiene, and sexuality/reproductive health
Facilitate employee assessments, trainings and vaccines related to health, including CPR, First Aid, AED, TB Assessments, Flu Vaccines, Bloodborne Pathogens, and EpiPen Administration
Maintain documentation related to employee injuries per OSHA protocols
Maintain R.N./B.S.N. license in good standing
Serve as a school staff leader on health and safety matters on the administrative team
Provide back-up relief for administrative staff
Perform other duties as determined by supervisor and/or the Head of School
Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge:
Valid and current Minnesota RN license
School nurse or pediatric experience preferred
Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with a range of students, parents, teachers, staff and community groups and organizations
Excellent organizational skills and ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs
