School One, a small, independent high school in Providence, Rhode Island, seeks a School Counselor. Founded in 1973, School One enrolls 90 students in an arts-intensive, college preparatory program. The school is highly progressive and personalized, characterized by small classes, nurturing relationships between staff and students, and a respectful community that values individual differences.
The School Counselor is a licensed professional who provides a variety of services related to students’ success at school and social-emotional wellbeing. The counselor also supports students’ advisors and parents, and liaises with outside therapists and providers. The School Counselor helps promote a safe and respectful school culture by developing programs and practices focused on wellness and connection. School One is not a therapeutic school, but does enroll a number of students with mental health challenges and/or learning differences. School One has a highly collaborative professional culture, characterized by mutual respect, communication, and commitment to all students’ success.
Major responsibilities of the School Counselor include:
Provide on-going, as-needed support to individual students
Oversee the school’s advising program and provide consultation to advisors on students’ needs
Serve as a member of the Special Education Team through involvement in the IEP process, providing services to students, and collaborating with other members of the Special Education Team.
Work with school leaders to develop and implement programs to promote a respectful, engaging, safe school culture including involvement with School One’s disciplinary processes and safety planning.
Assist with developing programs to promote students’, staff’s and parents’ understanding of adolescents needs and development.
This is a full-time 10-month per year position that follows the school calendar. Qualifications include, but are not limited to:
Licensed counseling credential, whether LCSW or LMHC or an equivalent.
