RESPONSIBILITIES: The Lower School counselor will join a well-established team of educators at Ravenscroft. The Lower School Counselor is responsible for the oversight of the emotional, social, and psychological well-being of Lower School students. Essential duties include:
Individual and Group Counseling: The primary responsibility of the Lower School Counselor is meeting with students, both individually and in groups, and to be available for problem-solving and consultation regarding students’ emotional, social, and academic issues. It is expected that the highest degree of ethical standards will be observed in carrying out these responsibilities.
Social and Emotional Student Education: The Lower School Counselor will help with providing developmentally appropriate, regular programming to enhance students’ social and emotional learning. With the Head of Lower School and other divisional leadership, the Counselor will help with Lead From Here (LFH) programming for Lower School including “Tree Talks” and grade level Launch Lessons. The Counselor works in concert with other divisional counselors, health staff, and the Lower School Leadership team to ensure proactive, comprehensive, developmentally appropriate programming.
Student Learning Support: The Counselor partners with divisional Academic Skills faculty in providing psychoeducational test interpretation, and works with faculty and parents in implementing academic accommodations and support. They also assist students, teachers, and parents in understanding educational, personal, or social factors which may be affecting a student’s academic progress. The Counselor serves on the LS Student Assistance Team.
Resource for Lower School Faculty and Staff: The Counselor will be an objective, available resource to the adults in the community. They are available for consultation and will provide faculty/staff with information on topics as varied as childhood development, standardized test interpretation, peer/adult relationships, and group dynamics. The Counselor will offer in-service training, as needed and requested, and may offer perspective on educational, personal, or social factors impacting learning and community membership.
Resource for Parents and Families: The Counselor will work with Lower School Leadership and the Counseling and Health Team in providing and enhancing opportunities for parent education. The counselor will also serve as a resource for parents and families to support student well-being.
Serving as a member of the LS Leadership Team: The LS Counselor will be a key member of the LS Leadership team. They will participate in weekly divisional leadership team meetings and on other divisional and school meetings, as assigned or appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should demonstrate a high degree of personal warmth, professionalism, and a clear and palpable interest in working with children. A minimum of a Master's Degree in School Counseling, Clinical/Counseling Psychology, School Psychology, or Clinical Social Work is required. Eligibility for (or already obtained) licensure in the state of North Carolina is preferred. Successful applicants will possess excellent computer, organizational, and interpersonal skills, and will have adaptability to fulfill the role in person and through a virtual platform. The candidate should have experience in a school setting, working with children and their parents - including teaching, counseling, and developing student and parent education programs.
