The Valley School of Ligonier is seeking a School Counselor (Grades K-9).
The Purpose of the School Counselor is to support students, families, and faculty of Valley School of Ligonier to offer social and emotional support as it relates to learning and the school environment. The School Counselor will embrace diversity and promote a positive school climate through collaboration with teachers, advisors and administrators to offer a curriculum that will support developmentally-appropriate social, emotional, career and academic growth. The School Counselor will address issues which impact learning and social/emotional needs while at school and refer outside resources if professional counseling is required.
Meet with students on an as needed, individual or small group basis.
Consult with parents/guardians at any time, concerning the needs of their child.
Collaborate with the school administration to develop policies that help identify and support students’ behavioral, emotional and social needs.
Maintain a high regard for the privacy and confidentiality of information collected or recorded about individuals with whom they work. The School Counselor will explain the limits of confidentiality (as determined by the school and in collaboration with the school’s health and wellness needs) in developmentally appropriate terms through multiple methods such as student handbooks, school counselor/counseling department website, school counseling brochures, classroom curriculum, and/or verbal notifications to individual students/parents.
Develop school-based programs to support the psychological well-being (emotional, social, etc.) of students within the context of the school community.
Collaborate with administrators, teachers and learning specialists to develop plans that adequately and appropriately accommodate for a child’s documented needs.
Educate the faculty and administration on components of the school counseling program, roles and responsibilities of the school counselor, and ways in which faculty and administration can utilize the counseling program on behalf of students.
Establish expectations for faculty, staff, and families for the program.
Evaluate the counseling program in conjunction with administration to measure the program’s support of and effect on the school’s mission and student well-being
Participate in school initiatives or professional development in which the entire school participates, including bringing in outside experts to educate the student, parent, and faculty communities regarding wellness issues.
Support Division Heads and Director of Admissions with admission process and decision-making process related to developmental, emotional and learning needs.
Valley School of Ligonier, founded in 1946, is a coeducational day school located on a 400-acre rural campus southeast of Pittsburgh. The behavioral health professional maintains a professional certification in an accredited field (e.g., social work, psychology, counseling, etc.).
Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, School Counseling or related field. Master’s Degree preferred
PA Certification in K-12 School Counseling or State Licensed Practicing Counselor
Experience with Elementary or Middle School Counseling preferred
