POSITION: Lower School Counselor - This position has the flexibility to be part-time (approximately 28 hours per week) to full time (approximately 40 hours per week).
REPORTS TO: Lower School Director
The Lower School Counselor is responsible for supporting the social and emotional health of students through counseling services. She or he develops, organizes, promotes, and carries out both proactive and responsive professional development, parent education, community events, and classroom lessons in support of the social and emotional needs of the division.
Build meaningful relationships with the lower school students, parents, and faculty/staff in order to cultivate a culture of wellbeing and a sense of community
Establish a confidential and supportive counseling environment in order to support the mental health needs of students, parents, and faculty/staff
Support teachers in implementing the social-emotional curriculum, and provide responsive lessons as needed
Serve on key task forces, committees, and groups in order to provide insight into the status of the wellbeing of the community
Maintain confidential records documenting contact with students and parents; develop procedures to ensure confidentiality
Collaborate with the Counseling department to develop education programs that strengthen relationships with students, faculty, and parents and promote understanding of child development
Collaborate with faculty, school nurse, learning support coordinator, division director, and outside professionals in order to best support the social, emotional, and academic needs of students
Lead faculty professional development about child development and mental health
Maintain and update a comprehensive list of outside consultants and service providers; make referrals to teachers, administrators, and/or families
Serve on Student Support Team, Cross-divisional Counseling Department, Enrollment committees, Character and Ethics, and other committees as requested (i.e. School Safety Team, etc) in order to provide insight on the wellbeing of the school community
Chaperone school field trips as needed
Serve as a role model to faculty through the active participation and leadership opportunities in professional organizations; read professional publications and maintain personal networks
Play a key role in helping to create and cultivate a diverse and inclusive community
Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:
Masters in a Counseling-related field required
Several years of experience as a counselor child development (in a school setting preferred)
Licensure Required (school counselor, LCMHC(A), LCSW, or RPT are preferred)
Competent in individual, group, and classroom counseling settings
Ability to diffuse emotionally intense situations with students, parents, and/or faculty
Warm, empathic, and discerning
Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to Greensboro Day School’s mission
Collaborative and responsive to professional feedback
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Sense of humor and playfulness is appreciated
Daily work requires supporting teachers, both indoors and outdoors. Counselors are required to participate in regular safety drills, learn CPR, learn how to apply a tourniquet, provide basic first aid, administer epi-pens when needed, and be able to support other student specific health-related needs. Some weekend, evening, or early morning work may be required from time to time.
When working with young children, counselors must be able to assist them in toileting, hand washing, nose-blowing, etc. when needed. They must be able to move quickly and frequently from standing to sitting with ease, and they must be able to sit on small chairs and the floor. Counselors must be able to assist in ensuring the safety of students during drills and emergencies that may arise from time to time.
