Lowell School, a progressive school of 340 students in NW Washington, DC, is currently seeking applicants for a full-time Middle School counselor. This role consults and collaborates with teachers, families, and administrators to meet the social-emotional needs of individuals and groups of students from 6th through 8th grade.
Work closely with the division director and the Student Support Team to observe students,; meet with teachers; identify social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students; and provide follow-up communication and planning.
Create an atmosphere of trust and collaboration between faculty and parents in order to enhance student learning and metacognitive growth.
Serve as initial point of contact for teachers, parents, and students who require social-emotional support.
Engage in ongoing communication and collaboration with parents and teachers regarding the social-emotional support of students.
Collaborate with the director of Middle School to arrange and lead meetings with parents, teachers, and outside professionals and agencies (tutors, outside evaluators, therapists, etc.) as needed.
Create and monitor supportive plans in collaboration with families, teachers, and outside professionals when needed.
Serve as an ongoing liaison between parents, teachers, and outside professionals and agencies to ensure support of students is uniform and consistent.
Provide appropriate and timely communication and follow-through, including appropriate documentation, on students’ needs and parent concerns.
Follow up with families on social and/or behavior challenges that occur during the school day.
Serve as coach to parents and teachers by providing 1:1 support and also planning, coordinating, and arranging or presenting regular educational opportunities about the stages of child and early adolescent development.
Facilitate conversations of a social and/or emotional nature with students, both individually and in small groups.
Teach classes that support social and emotional growth of students and a healthy school environment.
Develop and implement proactive classroom guidance curriculum and activities on a regular basis (including peer relationships, communication skills, small group coaching work, coping skills, problem-solving and decision-making, conflict resolution, etc.).
Design and deliver a health and wellness curriculum to the Middle School, and coordinate with the Primary School counselor to support cohesion and alignment.
Lead assemblies connected to the social-emotional curriculum when appropriate and necessary to the health and wellbeing of students’ lives in Middle School.
Provide crisis intervention and short-term support for students, families, faculty.
Provide guidance and support to students experiencing transitions in their lives (e.g. Primary to Middle School; moving; other life changes).
Maintain and update a comprehensive list of outside consultants and service providers; make referrals to teachers, administrators, and/or families.
Maintain accurate yearly records and ensure confidentiality of all student data according to the law and school protocols.
Psy.D, master’s degree in Counseling, and/or LCSW degree
At least five years of direct experience with Middle School students
Substantive and meaningful work in diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion initiatives
