Southborough, Massachusetts School Counselor Job Description
St. Mark's School seeks an experienced, collaborative, and enthusiastic School Counselor, beginning in late August 2020 and continuing through mid-November.
General Statement of Duties The School Counselor responds to individual students’ health needs and contributes to the creation of a healthy, productive, and safe community environment in which students can realize their intellectual, emotional, and physical potential for wellness. Congruent with these goals, the School Counselor is responsible for the following: evaluating students in crisis; making recommendations to the Director of Counseling Services regarding acute and long-term care for individual students; providing supportive counseling for individual students on a “drop-in” or scheduled basis; referring students to outside mental health professionals when appropriate and coordinating comprehensive treatment plans; educating students about issues related to healthy adolescent development; and supporting faculty’s work with students through child and adolescent development education and through recommendations for effective intervention strategies for individual students.
Supervision Received The School Counselor reports to the Director of Counseling Services.
Specific Duties Include
Collaborating with faculty, parents, and students to educate all community members to understand and distinguish the normative developmental challenges of childhood and adolescence from clinically significant mental health issues.
Contributing to an environment that understands and fully embraces normative adolescent developmental phenomena
Educating students, faculty, and parents about positive and productive responses to the distresses inherent in healthy human development
Evaluating students in crisis or at-risk, including the coordination of an appropriate treatment or intervention plan for students struggling with clinically significant mental health issues, using his or her expertise and the resources available to him or her, both within and outside of the school community
Identifying and responding to students who exhibit emotional, psychological, and behavioral distress outside of the range of normative adolescent development
Provides on-call responsibilities
Managing individual student cases
Consulting with supervisors and colleagues
Managing relationships with outside health providers
Fulfilling professional duties and obligations
Qualifications Requirements include a Master’s degree in the mental health/school counseling field and a minimum of five years of experience. A qualified candidate will have worked in a high school setting and have strong clinical skills and effective communication abilities. Familiarity with a boarding setting/community is highly desirable.
St. Mark’s, founded in 1865, is a coeducational college-preparatory school, educating students in grades nine through twelve, 80% of whom board.
