Green Hedges seeks a part-time School Counselor with a solid background in educating young children and building a curriculum around social-emotional learning. Green Hedges is a private independent preschool through Grade 8 school with approximately 140 students. The School is located in Vienna, VA, which is fourteen miles west of Washington, DC.
A successful candidate for the School Counselor position will be a mental health professional with a Masters degree or beyond and Virginia State licensure in counseling, psychology, or social work. A thorough knowledge of the academic and social-emotional development of children and experience working with children ages 3-14 (Pre-kindergarten through Grade 8) are also essential.
In addition, the ideal candidate will have:
• Demonstrated diversity training
• Experience building curriculum
• Five years minimum experience in the field
• Experience with crisis intervention
Candidates must successfully complete a required background check.
The School Counselor will:
Spend time with children in classrooms, on the playground, individually and in small groups to help support and develop their social and emotional needs
Plan and implement an intentional social and emotional learning curriculum at each grade level in collaboration with homeroom teachers and administration; teach weekly lessons at each grade level
Coordinate, teach, and build upon the existing Awareness of Growth Middle School curriculum
Oversee the Middle School advisor program
Consult and support classroom teachers regarding behavioral and emotional needs of children
Meet weekly with student-support and grade-level teams
Observe, record, and coordinate efforts with all constituents around the care of young children, including parents, outside therapists, and teachers
Collaborate with faculty and parents to build a strong foundation for open and trusting discussions in providing support for children
Create and maintain individualized plans for students who require them
Provide ongoing faculty and parent professional development around topics of interest
