A staff member in Fryeburg Academy’s Office for Post-Secondary Planning and School Counseling, the post-secondary counselor is a professional educator focused on students’ college and career options and placement, providing proactive, over-time guidance that engages all stakeholders in helping students achieve success at Fryeburg Academy and beyond. This individual reports directly to the director of the Office for Post-Secondary Planning and School Counseling and works regularly with other post-secondary school counselors, grade-level deans, and the Director of Studies.
Specific College and Career School Counselor duties fall among the following essential functions of the job:
Cultivates acquaintance and regular contact with students on his/her caseload
Provides regular, individualized academic, college, or career guidance in students’ junior and senior years
Administers a comprehensive gr. 9-12 career and college placement counseling curriculum based on student needs
Administers all aspects of post-secondary search and application/admission process—develops appropriate college/program lists, assists with applications, writes recommendations, collects, completes, and sends all supporting materials
Promotes college and career awareness and planning through work with advisory groups, other small group meetings, class meetings, and individual meetings with students
Develops effective familiarity and connections with a broad variety of American colleges, universities, and other post-secondary training and study programs; stays abreast of the latest information regarding college admissions
Consults and communicates with appropriate school personnel regarding student concerns
Maintains professionalism: adheres to laws and ethical standards of school counseling
Provides students with social and emotional support as needed; provides responsive crisis intervention, short-term counseling, and makes appropriate referrals to outside mental health service providers
Knowledge, Skills, Dispositions:
Possesses a thorough knowledge of college and career counseling approaches
Demonstrates an understanding of child (adolescent) development and behavior
Possesses engaging interpersonal skills and a strong work ethic; is energetic and flexible
Is experienced with needs of high school age students and their families
Is aware of and embraces cultural differences
Proficient in Naviance or Scoir; familiar with/can use Blackbaud
Effective organizational abilities and excellent oral and written communication skills, particularly with regard to writing high-quality letters of recommendation
Demonstrates a commitment to professional growth
Maintains membership with ASCA (American School Counselors Association) and MeSCA (Maine School Counselors Association)
Cultivates familiarity with relevant, timely issues in post-secondary planning and student support through professional reading
Qualifying Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred
Maine Certification in School Counseling preferred
