Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in North Seattle, is currently recruiting for Middle School Counselor (1.0 FTE) beginning in September 2020. The Middle School counselor is an important element of the web of support we provide to students in Middle School. They oversee the Counseling Office and provide short term 1:1 and small group support to address student social-emotional and developmental needs. The counselor also strives to make the Counseling Office an inviting, fun, and helpful area in the school, one in which all students feel welcome.
Responsibilities The Middle School counselor position includes the following responsibilities:
Provide short term 1:1 and small group counseling support to 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students to help them with developmental and social-emotional needs including self-regulation and awareness, social problem solving, self-care, and stress management. This includes meeting with students as scheduled, supervising and supporting students who drop into the counseling office, keeping records of student meetings and offering outside referrals when applicable.
Provide crisis intervention and safety assessments according to the school’s safety protocol
Implement and manage student support plans for students with a documented qualifying mental health condition
Provide responsive services such as consultation with faculty, staff, advisors, families and outside providers about student needs and concerns
Be an active an engaged member of the Student Support Team. This includes attending and participating in weekly Students Support Team meetings to discuss students in need of support, following through on relevant action items, and collaborating and consulting with the Upper School counselors and Student Support Team as needed.
Attend and participate in student grade-level meetings
Prepare and participate in student staffing meetings
Engage in the co-curricular and extra-curricular life of the school
Maintain a warm and inviting Counseling Office atmosphere
Provide education on relevant social-emotional topics to students, faculty and staff, and families in small groups as well as in larger meetings
Stay up to date on relevant professional development
Keep current with laws governing confidentiality as they pertain to adolescents and mental health services in schools
Requirements and Qualifications
A degree in counseling, school counseling, psychology or social work (or related field)
Excellent knowledge of the social-emotional and developmental needs of adolescent students
Training and experience with safety and risk assessment
Experience with educational settings is preferred
Ability to balance independent work and self-management while also working within a multidisciplinary team
Ability to connect with adolescents while maintaining appropriate boundaries
Strong attention to detail, written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to communicate information about complex student information in a respectful and clear manner
Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidates will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
Candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks
