The River School is seeking a School Counselor to join our trans-disciplinary team. Depending on the candidate's availability, this position could start as early as November 2019.
This position will focus on students’ social and emotional needs in early childhood, from the toddler classes (18-month-old children) through Grade 3. This individual must be collaborative, communicative, compassionate, energetic, engaged and passionate about working with students, teachers, parents and all other members of the educational community. The school counselor will assist with character education initiatives and collaborate on social emotional learning programs (e.g Social Thinking) in the preschool and elementary programs. The counselor will plan and implement parent education opportunities along with our school psychologists and administrators.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities include:
Serve as a student consultant for all students in the Preschool program through 3rd grade.
Be present, positive, and available to students and assist with resolving peer conflicts.
Assist students dealing with family crisis.
Assist with character education and other social-emotional programs for students aged 18-months-old through 3rd grade.
Provide support with designing and implementing individual behavior plans for students.
Participate in school related conferences, training, and committee work
Assist teachers with parent communication and conduct concern meetings
Plan and lead parent education activities in collaboration with school psychologists and the administrative team
In times of crisis, the School Counselor coordinates with the school and community to bring together resources. As the foundation of his/her work, the Counselor adheres to professional and ethical standards within the field. The ideal candidate will be experienced and expert at providing psychological support in a diverse and inclusive school community. Some evening and weekend hours will be necessary.
Key job requirements include:
Certified School Counselor, or MSW, LPC, LCPC required.
School counseling experience at the Elementary level strongly preferred.
Experience with Teacher Child Interaction Training and Social Thinking desirable.
Strong writing skills as well as communication and interpersonal skills.
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task effectively.
