For over 50 years, The Gateway School has transformed the lives of bright children who experience academic difficulty as a result of language-based learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, reading and writing disorders), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), executive function disorder, visual-spatial or auditory processing difficulties, and/or gross and fine motor coordination issues. Located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Gateway enrolls 205 students between the ages of 5-14. In small classes with a low student-to-teacher ratio, faculty and therapists meet students where they are, individualize instruction accordingly, and develop them into skilled, strategic, independent learners who are capable of advocating for themselves and who are prepared to transition into mainstream school and life.
The Gateway School seeks a leave replacement Physical Education teacher to teach classes to both Lower and Middle School students. The ideal candidate is an experienced Physical Education teacher who has demonstrated success with a broad range of students and is looking to join a collaborative learning community. The candidate will bring a strong commitment to teaching students with language-based learning disabilities. Opportunity to coach the girls’ basketball team is also available.
Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education required; Master’s degree and teaching certification a plus.
A minimum of two years of teaching experience.
Independent school and special education experience preferred.
Strong classroom management, communication and organizational skills.
Experience planning and implementing innovative lesson plans.
