The Calhoun School, a progressive independent school located on Manhattan's Upper West Side, is seeking a full-time Health & Physical Education Teacher to begin in August 2019.
The Health & Physical Education Teacher is responsible for creating a classroom environment that fosters, promotes and develops an understanding of the relationship of healthy body function and exercise; that motivates each student to cultivate physical fitness, and appropriate social and emotional adjustment; that discovers and develop talents of students in physical achievement; and that develops strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each student’s ability.

The Health & Physical Education Teacher will report to the P.E. Team Leader.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Teach knowledge and skills in the areas of physical fitness, health education, and individual, dual or team sports, utilizing balanced health and physical education program and other appropriate resources, equipment, materials, technology and instructional strategies.
Provide individualized and small group instruction in accordance with the curriculum and the needs of each student, to the extent feasible.
Provide differentiated instruction based on the student’s individual level of functioning and preferred learning modalities and offer alternatives during classes to accommodate different levels of fitness.
Provide a positive role model of appropriate and respectful interactions with students and staff and facilitate the development of character and community.
Develop and implement health lessons in which each student has an understanding of their relationship to their body and how it functions.
Motivate each student to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits and good social and emotional adjustment.
Develop strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each student’s ability while teaching cognitive concepts related to motor skills and fitness.
Collaboration and Communication:
Collaborate with colleagues both intra- and cross-departmentally to share best practices and ensure student progress.
Attend faculty meetings and conferences.
Maintain consistent relationships with families, including phone calls, emails and conferences.
Engage in the wider life of the School.
Strong commitment to, belief in, and alignment with Calhoun’s mission and values.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts physical education, safety, child growth and development, effective progressive instructional strategies, classroom management, and research related to learning.
Experience in designing and evaluating curriculum for Health & Physical Education instruction.
Strong affinity for, and commitment to, progressive, humanistic education.
Interest in teaching and working with students in Lower and Middle School grades.
Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.
Demonstration of enthusiasm and interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents and the community.
Flexibility and ability to cope with change.
