The Upper School Health Educator is a full-time teacher and member of the Health and Wellness Department, reporting to the Director of Counseling. Primary responsibilities include: teaching four health classes per semester, serving as a faculty advisor, creating and facilitating sex positive curriculum, and collaborating on school-wide programming related to health and wellness.
In the semester-length Health course, students explore definitions of personal wellness. Students build and practise the skills necessary to make healthy and responsible choices and to achieve balance in three areas of one’s life: social, emotional, and physical. The major units in this course are intuitive eating and diet culture, relationships, social emotional health, human sexuality, and substance abuse prevention. The ideal candidate will be have best practice knowledge of current trends in nutrition, sex education and mental health.
Monitor progress of each student for mastery of course content, providing intervention or differentiation when necessary and appropriate, and consistent high quality feedback always
Ensure relevancy by connecting course content to other academic domains and authentically exploring the relationship between course content, the Milken Community Schools mission, and the Portrait of the Graduate
Provide logistical support for upper school advisors including, maintaining advisory calendar, communication of advisor responsibilities, dissemination of materials, and maintenance of program resources.
Work in partnership with Director of Counseling to develop push-in programs for the 10th and 11th grade advisory program, and train push-in leaders
Design lessons that are well-sequenced in terms of content and developmental appropriateness
Create a learning environment where students feel safe and welcome
Demonstrate situational adaptability that balances the needs of social teens, the needs of the lesson, and teachable moments
Work in partnership with the Director of Counseling in the development, implementation and staffing of student and parent health and wellness education programming
Pursue ongoing professional development in the fields of education, and health and wellness
Other duties as assigned
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, required; master’s degree preferred
Previous teaching experience preferred
