University Liggett School has a long tradition as an outstanding school, known for providing the kind of innovative and exploratory experiences that connect a diverse student body with their learning in dynamic and engaging ways. It is an inspiring place where ideas and possibilities abound. Like any school, there are traditions which form the foundation of our work in the community, and our foundation is strong. Our charge is to be better than good enough, and to understand that risk taking, innovation, and creativity lie at the center of good teaching and learning for our students and our faculty.
Departmental Philosophy and Mission
The Liggett Physical Education department creates a safe environment, both physically and psychologically, for each of its students. Compassion, responsibility and acceptance of others are paramount on a daily basis through instruction, reflection and debriefing. Within a competitive situation each student can fully engage and build self-confidence in a comfortable setting regardless of skill level. Units are designed so that each student finds a role to experience success.
The Liggett Physical Education department promotes and upholds the qualities inherent in teamwork and good sportsmanship. Classes promote a cooperative environment in which students see the importance of communication and collaboration where both sharing and listening to ideas is encouraged. All students learn to recognize, accept, and value their strengths, as well as the strengths of others. Active participation and goal setting challenge students to achieve their personal best. Throughout this positive physical education experience, students gain the knowledge, confidence and skills necessary to lead safe, healthy and physically active lives.

About University Liggett School
A thriving independent school welcoming more than 600 students in grades PK through 12, Liggett is located in the idyllic small town of Grosse Pointe Woods, situated along the banks of scenic Lake St. Clair and 15 minutes from the dynamic city of Detroit. The school is in its 138th year, making it the oldest, coeducational independent school in Michigan. This long tradition of excellence lives alongside substantial academic, athletic, and artistic successes in recent years as the school has shifted toward an innovative curricular and pedagogical approach under the Curriculum for Understanding. This progressive approach ably supports Liggett's mission to empower students to develop intellectual curiosity, leadership and confidence to contribute to a complex and changing world. We challenge students to excel and to achieve their highest potential. We create opportunities for discovery and achievement by developing a faculty who foster the strengths of each student. We teach and practice the values of respect and responsibility in an emotionally and physically safe environment.
