Summary of Responsibilities Reporting to the Primary Principal, the Counselor works closely with the respective administrative team to support the social and emotional well-being of students, parents and faculty. The Counselor, in coordination with Primary School administration, will work to create a safe and welcoming environment for all students and be a resource for short-term psycho-emotional counseling, support and education for the Primary community.
Utilizing leadership, advocacy and collaboration, the Counselor promotes student success, provides preventive services and delivers a comprehensive school counseling program for all Primary students. Major Functions and Responsibilities The School Counselor will: 1. Create and establish an atmosphere of trust and build rapport with students by being visible and connecting with students in numerous and varied situations. 2. Promote a positive climate among students, staff and community. 3. Provide individual and/or small group counseling as needed. 4. Participate in meetings to discuss a student’s educational needs and recommend interventions and solutions with the administration, the Student Support Team and faculty. 5. Conduct classroom observations and guide the development of classroom-based strategies for social/emotional support of students. 6. Assist students and families in crisis counseling on a short-term basis and make appropriate referrals as necessary. 7. Communicate with parents in a timely fashion regarding the student’s well-being. 8. Collaboratively plan and teach lessons which focus on establishing a core of social and emotional competencies. 9. Coordinate with faculty on lessons concerning student personal and emotional development; work with faculty on managing and fostering students’ social-emotional development. 10. Present to faculty, parents and/or students on strategies and interventions related to social and emotional growth and development. 11. Communicate with administrative and staff colleagues in other divisions to ensure a continuity of student support services. 12. Manage and monitor social-emotional cases. 13. Maintain proper and confidential student records. 14. Maintain an extensive list of professional services to share with the division community as well as to facilitate appropriate referrals. 15. Serve as an on-going liaison between the School and outside professionals and services. 16. Promote a positive climate among students, staff and community. 17. Perform other duties as may be prescribed by the Head of School or Associate Head of School.
Qualifications (Education, Certifications, Years of Experience) Candidates for this position should be familiar with independent or international school education and have at least 3 years’ experience in a school setting, with significant experience in addressing the psychological, social and emotional issues, which affect students ages 3-12 in a multicultural setting. A Bachelor’s degree is required, a Master’s degree in school counseling is preferred, ideally from a CACREP certified school. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, possess a strong background with younger children and their families, work effectively with both students and adults, work collaboratively with teams and feel comfortable taking the lead in identifying areas of need. Some fluency in French or Spanish is preferred but not required.
