Bachelor's degree in Health Promotion/Education, Public Health, Social Work, or a related field. Master's degree is desirable. Two years of experience in higher education, prevention programming, or a related field. Supervisory experience is preferred. Certifications may be required. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.
Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:
Performs highly advanced specialist duties for the Health and Wellness Education program under the Student Health Center.
Primary Responsibilities (Staff Positions Only):
Develops and oversees evidence-informed health promotion, education and prevention programs that address the topic of substance use by SHSU students. Addresses challenges and changes collaboratively and creatively through supporting individual students, conducting campus needs assessments, building positive partnerships, implementing innovative programming and evaluating programmatic impact and reach. Supports the Office of Health Promotion (OHP) mission of empowering SHSU students to maximize their potential by offering programs and services on the individual, interpersonal, and institutional levels that promote positive, holistic well-being and reduce high-risk behaviors. Oversees a comprehensive public health approach to student substance use and serves as lead for alcohol and other drug misuse prevention efforts on and off campus. Uses evidence-informed practices to set strategic priorities and guide program development. Researches, implements, and evaluates initiatives and programs specific to alcohol and other drugs. Creates, refines and executes brief motivational interventions for students involved in drug, alcohol and high-risk alcohol (such as transports) behaviors/incidents through the Sam Houston Alcohol Referral Program (SHARP). Responds to requests for programming, training and consultation. Provides health education events, programs, and outreach including: online, classroom, clubs, and large groups. Targets outreach to key stakeholders and underserved populations. Trains resident advisors and student leaders. Coordinates ongoing development and support of the campus collegiate recovery program. May provide supervision to wellness interns and student employees. Assists with the development of OHP marketing materials. Incorporates multicultural diversity and social justice concepts and principles into health promotion services. Continues to develop and tailor culturally and community fluent relevant health promotion trainings and health communication campaign materials. Independently develops positive professional relationships with diverse groups of students, staff, faculty and other constituencies such as parents, community members, and professional colleagues from other institutions. Participates in weekly meetings and professional development opportunities. Provides regular reports and updates to the Assistant Director of the OHP. Provides smooth and efficient referrals for students to campus resources as appropriate. Participates in collaborative committees as requested and appropriate. Keeps current on professional knowledge in collegiate and community health promotion. Supports and attends departmental and University sponsored and co-sponsored programming. Exercises discretion in highly confidential student and personnel matters. Performs other related duties as assigned.
