The specialist teacher at MP&MS works as a member of a team of teachers, sharing the responsibility of creating a classroom community and planning curriculum and instruction for students through a supportive working relationship. Teachers work together to understand each student from multiple perspectives and use an integrated and interactive approach to learning. They build meaningful bonds with students, maintain high academic standards, teach children to engage in respectful and kind behavior, and promote a love of learning.
The physical education teacher focuses on building skills that promote mature and healthy physical development, flexibility, and coordination in students in grades PreK-4.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teach assigned PE classes for grades PreK-4 using a rotating curriculum.
Deliver a student-centered curriculum with opportunities for choice, real-world problem solving, creativity, and intellectual engagement.
Use developmentally appropriate strategies to encourage fairness, conflict resolution, and personal best.
Incorporate effective strategies for differentiation and assessment.
Develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff.
Foster communication with teachers in order to effectively discuss and support student needs in/out of the classroom.
Coach at least two sessions of after-school sports, as a head coach or assistant coach at the primary/middle school level.
Communicate last-minute schedule changes in a timely fashion to all affected parties (students, parents, other schools, facility managers, and program staff).
Participate actively in faculty meetings and work collaboratively with colleagues on committees and other work to further the development of the school’s program.
Integrate explicit social-emotional literacy teaching into the program.
Defend the dignity and worth of each member of the community and create an environment that fosters respect, understanding, and acceptance of differences; always model appropriate and ethical behavior.
Pursue professional growth opportunities on an ongoing basis.
Be a positive and contributing member of the professional community.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
Supervise primary students before school and during recess shifts in coordination with other faculty members?.
Participate fully in the life of the school, including overnight field trips, student performances, and other such events.
Experience and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and teaching credential or advanced degree
At least 3 years of prior experience teaching PE
A passionate commitment to creating an innovative, joyful environment for students
Ability to create an inclusive classroom community that allows for a multitude of perspectives to be heard and respected
Knowledge of curriculum development and differentiated instruction
Knowledge of Responsive Classroom, Kimochis, Toolbox, Mindfulness desired
Broad knowledge and an appreciation of child development
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a member of a teaching team
Creativity, flexibility, and a growth mindset, with interest in being part of a community of learners
Strong organizational and time management skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Knowledge of educational technology to support teaching and learning
Nuanced understanding of DEI/social justice knowledge from a personal or programmatic perspective
