The Philadelphia School (TPS) is seeking a Part-time Lower School Counselor (50% of a Full-Time equivalent) for the 2019-2020 academic year. We are a PreK - 8 progressive/independent school located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with an enrollment of 475 students. The Philadelphia School is seeking a dynamic, warm, flexible and experienced part-time Lower School Counselor (Preschool - 3rd Grade) to join our Learning Resources Team. The Learning Resources team at The Philadelphia School includes a school psychologist, learning specialists, and other professionals who work within a multi-disciplinary framework to support the academic and social-emotional development of our wide range of learners.
Nuture a safe and healthy environment for learning and play
Engage in ongoing collaboration and consultation with school psychologist, administrators, learning specialists, teachers, and other consulting professionals
Provide short term, goal-focused counseling for individuals and groups of students
Guide and support teachers with social-emotional learning and behavioral needs of students
Teach classroom-based lessons on topics related to social, emotional and behavioral wellness
Help children build normative developmental skills such as organization, problem solving, and conflict resolution
Communicate appropriately and effectively with students, parents, administrators, faculty and other school personnel
Document student and parent interactions, meetings, and communications
Respond to acute emergent situations with calm, ease and tact
Engage in professional development and maintain current understanding of trends and findings in the field
Masters in Counseling or Social Work with focus on childhood development and with significant counseling experience (5 year minimum preferred)
Knowledge of and experience with developmental, social, emotional and cognitive needs of young children
Ability to work in a collegial and highly collaborative environment
Familiarity or experience with Responsive Classroom/Developmental Designs
Commitment to a progressive, dynamic, and diverse school community
Strong verbal and written communication skills across a range of audiences
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Sensitivity, cultural competence, and good judgment
