Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with occasional evenings and weekends.

Under the general direction of the Director of the Student Health Center (SHC), the Senior Health Educator adopts and champions an approach that addresses all interrelated levels of campus ecology: these include individual, interpersonal, community, and environmental influences on health. The Senior Health Educator is informed by these approaches and guided by the tenets of health communications, health promotion, prevention, and the interrelated principles, programs, and activities that connect them. Health promotion in higher education emphasizes the creation of supportive environments for students. This involves a portfolio of programs that optimizes student learning and engagement in healthy living, the development of strong community values, and positive lifestyle choices. Health promotion interventions enhance student awareness, strengthen their ability to understand and respond to health challenges, support their efforts to adopt healthier behaviors, and create environments that keep students well and may help them flourish.
Provides overall leadership of health program goals and outcomes.
Provides lead direction to the Health Education staff.
Hires, trains, supervises, evaluates and mentors a Team of Certified Peer Health Educators, including Student Health Advisory Council (SHAC) advisement.
Continuously assesses and determines Health Education area needs.
Oversees the Health Educators strategic planning process, plans, goals, priorities, and establishes measurable objectives in alignment with the mission, vision, strategic direction, and priorities of CSUSB and its key partners.
Implements campus-wide programs and services that are informed by the best available scientific evidence and/or empirical research.
Utilizes knowledge of health communications theory and practice to inform the direction, methodology, and techniques applied to enhance the effectiveness of community outreach and education programming.
Oversees strategies for fostering student engagement in health promotion and prevention efforts.
Utilizes appropriate assessment techniques to evaluate health promotion and prevention programming insuring mission accomplishment and high quality health services; uses findings to advise senior leadership and inform program and policy development.
Develops and recommends policies and plans for achievement of health education objectives and services keeping in line with industry standards like the American College Health Association.
Plans, designs, implements, evaluates and pursues funding for health education programs including screening and early intervention, peer health education and training, and intern training programs for the college age population
Keeps up to date with current trends within the industry by participating in system wide, county health activities and professional organizations while using the latest technologies to improve and solve problems.
Campus-wide Health Education
Designs/participates in a campus wide multilevel and planned approach to health education and prevention.
Together with the SHC Director, serves as the prime contact for the Center of Health Education and Wellness program and works closely with the entire campus community and appropriate community agencies to sponsor and facilitate a variety of wellness programming initiatives that address such issues as alcohol/drug abuse, mental health, nutrition, stress management, physical health and other related topics.
Implements and provides health education activities on a campus and system wide level with the aim of addressing and/or reducing risk-taking behavior among students.
Provides disease specific screening and educational programming including substance abuse prevention and education, promotion of healthy eating, physical fitness, sexuality education and skill building for healthy relationships, sexual, physical and emotional violence prevention, and promotion of and education about stress management and relaxation.
Incumbent will be regularly assigned to work at the San Bernardino Campus, however work will also include occasionally working assignments at the Palm Desert Campus.
Health Promotion and Education
Uses formal and informal organizational structures within SHC to integrate prevention services with medical and mental health services.
Consults with senior staff about public health initiatives and crises.
Provides expertise, in collaboration with other CSUSB areas, to develop, implement, and learn from staff engagement and student satisfaction assessments.
Provides central coordination of all CSUSB area alcohol-related programs, including the administration of online alcohol health education, and participation on the CSUSB Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) Committee.
Identifies outside funding opportunities for innovative programs and oversees preparation of related proposals for grants and contracts awards.
Disseminates and presents health trends and data to key campus stakeholders.
Collaborates with key stakeholders on and off campus to develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive highly-visible, evidence-informed prevention efforts that achieve high-quality, and measurable public health outcomes.
Implements environmental strategies to promote good health, success, and prepares students to be informed health care consumers and community advocates.
Provides consultation, direction, and leadership for campus prevention initiatives that focus on the most significant risk factors for CSUSB students, including, alcohol and other drug use, mental health problems, stress management, and power-based personal violence, and mental illness.
Builds effective partnerships across campus to promote policies that support student health and well-being and perform other related duties as assigned.
Applicants must possess a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in an approved program in health education or a related health field. Equivalent to one to two years of progressively responsible health education experience or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Ability to assess needs and establish or recommend program priorities and goals and develop plans to achieve goals; collect, compile, chart, and analyze data pertinent to health education program planning; plan, organize, conduct or oversee a variety of health education program and activities including discussion groups and workshops; develop educational materials and media such as pamphlets, audio and video materials, and electronic media; present ideas and information accurately, effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing; use computer and web-based information technology systems as a resource for research and providing health education programs; maintain confidentiality consistent with applicable laws and regulations; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, students, medical, and other health professionals, representatives of the news media, and other community groups.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
